As much as I love The Dark Knight, I don't think it can win in editing, because I can think of a scene off the top of my head where the sound doesn't even match the lips in some parts- Dent and Rachel talking in court.

Australia got an oscar nod, I dunno if anyone noticed... best costume design. I'm surprised The Wrestler didn't get nominated for best original song (Bruce Springsteen). I would have chosen that for sure. Good to see Richard Jenkins get nominated... I heard his role was just brilliant but anything but powerful so it was skeptical to get the academy's attention.

Rest in Peace, Heath Ledger

Gladiator and Braveheart were nominated for best picture and best director. Braveheart won both, Gladiator "only" best picture.

The Golden Globes "Think" they're important but it's just a bunch of FOREIGN Media journalists who throw a good party, food and liquor is served, and it's not just for Film, as tv shows are included. It's a fun entertaining night, but as far as Importance relative to the Oscars, it's not even close.

More of a better comparison is the SAG Awards (on this Sunday nite at 8pm I think on TNT & TBS), which are members of the Screen Actors Guild who are actually IN the industry and vote on nominees in their field.

I'm shocked Chris Nolan didn't get At Least a BEST DIRECTOR nom., especially over (of the 5 listed) Ron Howard for "Frost/Nixon." I'm sure the MOVIE is great and the acting is fine as well, but how much harder could it have been to Direct a movie about a PLAY that mainly stars only Two lead characters, vice a huge production and logistical nightmare, effects driven Epic like THE DARK KNIGHT ??!! I mean I love most of Ron Howard's films, but as far as This Year goes and directing choices, I'd have left his film up for Best Picture over Director, and thought for sure Nolan would get that. And as someone noted, Original Screenplay was a possible choice also.

At least the film got nominated for the Technical Categories: Make-up, Art Direction, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, & Visual Effects - 7 Total. I hope it cleans up here at least!

My predictions...

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
Best Actor: Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
Best Actress: Meryl Streep in Doubt
Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis in Doubt
Best Animated Film: Wall-E
Best Director: Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire

I, too, am disappointed Dark Knight didn't get nominations for director and best movie. I also think The Wrestler should have been nominated more, including in best movie. I think it's ridiculous and stupid that Robert Downey Jr got nominated for Tropic Thunder. I'm surprised Michael Shannon got nominated for Revolutionary Road. He gave the best performance in that movie, but nobody really talked about it.

I am glad Mickey Rourke, Heath Ledger, and Wall-E all got nods. I would have liked to see TDK get the nod just as an honor same with Nolan as director.

Whoa -- "Ridiculous & Stupid that RDJ got nom'd for Tropic Thunder." ? I couldn't disagree more with your "Ridiculous" & "Stupid" comments. Surprising to some "Maybe", but ridiculous and stupid? Really? lol. To each his/her own, but i'd heard and read many a report who loved his performance and thought it was very chance of him to go that much over the top, and potentially dangerous (as far as his playing a black actor/character) without being insulting. He prob. lucked out cuz' he was so damn funny in it that he didn't get hardly any backlash that I can recall.

THE WRESTLER is Finally opening in my area and i'll Def. go see it 1st chance I get, but i'm not surprised at all it didn't get a Best Picture nod. Mickey Rourke has a chance to win, maybe a long-shot even, seeing as he's been on hiatus pretty much for 10-15 years acting wise (aside from a small role here or there), and hopefully will mainly serve to Boost his choice of roles and get him back in the game. I think Best Actor will be between Frank Langella & Sean Penn, with Brad Pitt or Mickey Rourke a possible chance to have a Surprise winner, Rourke obviously moreso than Pitt.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong... (<kudos to Dennis Miller's old SNL Wk-End Update gig! )

After quick look I'm disappointed that The Reader earned a Best Picture nomination over The Dark Knight, and that Christopher Nolan didn't earn a Best Director nod.

Not nominating The Dark Knight is going to bite the Academy in the ass.

Dont get me wrong, I love RDJ, but how does he get nominated for Tropic Thunder (a immature comedy) over Kevin Bacon in Frost/Nixon which could have been one of the best supporting roles this decade

i agree. i think his tony stark was much better than his kirk lazarus (not saying his stark performance deserves an oscar nod, just that i consider it better than lazarus performance and don't understand how that got a nom)

The film must be nominated buy the country it is from to be considered. It wasn't submitted.

I didnt realize Iron Man and Hellboy 2 got nominations too, I loved those movies, but comic book movies really have no business in the Oscars.

Its seriously like saying James Franco getting a nomination for Pineapple Express..

I see alot of movies that just belong on the MTV movie awards that have been nominated. Was 2008 really THAT bad for movies?
