Four kays. Anything higher was what it was scanned at, not mastered at.

Wasn't the original Evil Dead shot in 16mm? This could be pure misinformation, but I know I've read comment of people of the opinion that there wouldn't be any real noticeable improvement to a 4K transfer of a 16mm film.

Anyone want to chime in? And by anyone I mean Geoff.

Actually wanted to ask you, Geoff: How will (does) the 16 mm translate to 4K?

Perhaps Sony is releasing the extended cut of the remake.

Glad to see this coming to 4k. Raimi's best IMO and easily my favorite of the Evil Dead trilogy.

EDIT: We sure this isn't the remake being released?

Either way, I enjoy both the original and the update, but admittedly, I prefer the original version.

The Evil Dead was composed for 1.66:1 widescreen but was shown open matte at premiere and was matted to 1.85:1 for general release.

1.85:1 is apparently Raimi's preferred ratio for the film nowadays.

He's not an admin as far as I'm aware. He is quite known in this section of the forum however. He has a high end panel and a keen eye.

People look to him for reviews prior to their own purchases as he gives accurate and honest assesments of what he sees. I've read plenty of his posts and can see why his style is popular here. He will be brutally honest and doesn't care about going against the grain with his reviews, laying out negatives and positives when he is reviewing something.

His opinions are also largely shared by others with high end panels and he isn't abrasive in (or outside of) his reviews, thusly, he comes off being very trustworthy and not full of spit...at least that's my assesment of him. I would hope that's fair.

In my opinion there are two things indicating that this is the original 1981 release from Lionsgate.
1) Blowitoutahere.com puts Lionsgate as the studio in the specifications
2) Best Buy pre-order price is the Lionsgate price of $17.99

Thank you for the kind words sirs, there as just as many who think me an arrogant tool (also true) so I'll take the praise where I can get it. Along with several more paragraphs for your delectation and delight.

As for de question, I take it you guys haven't recently seen The Evil Dead on BD? It's an older disc now but I got my wires crossed, it was sourced from a then-new 2K master from the negative and it looks amazing for what it is. I'm more confused by mike's 6K comments, is that a newer resto? While there's a lot to be said for whether 16mm wil actually resolve anything more than 2K's worth of information (if that) you will absolutely gain advantages from an oversampled 4K/6K scan of the negative because it will refresh those parts than an HD telecine just can't reach.

With that already done, will the UHD improve on an already excellent Blu-ray (German exklusiv DNR version notwithstanding)? With the possibility of spatial resolution already maxed out on the BD we've got to look at all the other things that UHD can improve upon, namely higher chroma resolution, high dynamic range etc. Any more spatial detail will be a bonus.

Click the following for how a 16mm horror classic looks between Blu and a 4K edition in the past:
