All I know is, after seeing Cloverfield and GOT on 4K, they can make anything look exceptional on this format.

I should've written that better. What I meant to say was that the detail won't be that much different due to it being shot in 16mm.

It can look better no doubt about that but the difference won't be night and day.

Most of those were regarding 35mm movies, were they not? The general facts regarding 16mm's resolving power are that it tops out at 2K, and that's in laboratory conditions (slowest stock, sharpest glass, static test patterns etc) when overscanned with all the 4K bells and whistles. On real-world 16mm shot quick and dirty some 40 years ago we'll be getting more abundant grain with an actual 4K master and whatever traces of information were filtered out of the previous 1080p version, but if there's a big difference in sheer resolution alone between the two then I'd be absolutely amazed.

But the myth is that Cloverfield was shot with a potato. It really wasn't, not all of it, and that's plainly obvious on the UHD. And GoT was shot on Alexa so it had a great starting point despite all the mutterings about what it was finished at.

I hear you, but, frankly, I’m very skeptical because I’ve heard so many arguments like that before. We’ll see how it turns out.

I remember thinking that if Cloverfield could get a big bump from this format then it really is the real deal. It did, and it is.

I think those going into these low bugdet catalogue titles with realistic expectations will be alright.

So will this be the first 16mm movie to grace the 4K UHD format?

I thought 16mm film had roughly 3K worth of info, so wouldn’t a UHD Blu do the film some justice in the PQ department as far as detail goes?

No it’s closer to 2K, it’s half the width of 35mm.

But the thing is we're not talking about some janky old transfer when it comes to the previous versions, it wasn't done on a turnip (having to use different root vegetables now) from some grotty element but was done using the original negative and finished at 2K from an oversampled scan. Even now the BD is still one of the most gorgeously film-like discs I've ever seen and while I'm never shy of singing 4K's praises I'm not going to shoot someone down for opining that the 4K isn't going to smash the BD for resolution alone. It's going to bring the grain and whatever else the HDR pass can muster but an abundance of extra detail, I dunno.

Yeah the BD is rather nice. I was floored when I first saw it. I’m really excited to see how this turns out. I’m expecting a very subtle HDR pass.

Pre ordered the Evil Dead 2 steelbook from Zavvi, now this and Halloween announcements. It’s a great year for horror on 4K. Now The Shining please, warmer erm germ. I would actually love the Evil Dead remake in 4K and the uncut version at that, I heard US iTunes had it in 4K !!

There are some moments that look really blown out on the BD, I can envisage them being greatly improved upon by the HDR. Not that it'll turn the movie's visuals into Guardians Vol.2 or anything but there's a fair bit of scope for more range to be exhumed.

For sure, I’m interested to see how the colour will turn out.

On a side note, I’m glad the DV black level issues are resolved for these horror classics.

I thought the initial consensus was that GoT was barely an upgrade on the BD. Has this opinion changed now?

Yeah, that’s right. About 1.5K. Don’t know why I was thinking so high.

Best Buy has it up and it’s titled “Evil Dead”. Maybe it’s the new one?

If it’s Lionsgate than it’s the original.

16mm is close to 2K, but Super 16 is 3K. 35mm is 4K-ish.
