Maybe Sony started a bad trend re-mastering and replacing but now I really want an updated Blackhawk Down. PCM sound is scary-good but, wow, could the PQ be much improved. Call me spoiled with the new transfers. All I can say is I'd hate to own HD-DVD and know that there is no hope for better.

I think BHD is picturewise very close (if not 99%) to the original master. Sure it's compressed with MPEG2, but with a high bitrate, and as a result there are no compression flwas. I really love the PQ of BHD and i don't think a AVC or VC-1 encode would show any difference to the exisitng MPEG2 encode. Ridley Scott made a stylistic decision to raise the contrast, change the colour palette and boost the black levels. This is all perfectly reproduced by the Blu-Ray transfer, without loosing detail or sharpness. The only reason for double dipping this movie for me would be of more extras and the "extended cut".
EDIT: And i dont think Sony is starting a trend to remaster every MPEG2 encode. It's actually an attempt to deliver quality to releases, that were mastered quite bad and BHD is definitely not one of them ![]() Last edited by Jack; 08-03-2007 at 03:42 AM. |

you just answered your own problem your trying to compare a war movie to a POTC type film ... I own both regular dvd, 3 disk box set dvd, and the blu-ray version destroyed and I mean LEVELED the dvd versions maybe its time you upgrade your tv if you think it didnt look good
sorry to tell you if your trying to compare 007, POTC to black hawk down it could be the highest quality encoding of any movie and you probly still wouldnt be happy the fact is they are very different movies Last edited by supersix4; 08-03-2007 at 05:06 AM. |

PQ of BHD ist still one of the best, even POTC has little grain. I don't know why some people don't understand that grain is part of the picture if shot on classic film like bugs are part of microsoft software. The better the transfer the clearer you see grain or defects of the source material.
Those grain threats spread faster than plaque. My BD: POTC 1/2 CR BHD The Fifth Element (R) Apocalypto The Untouchables Flags Of Our Fathers Secret Window Big Fish Kingdom Of Heaven Rocky First Blood Planet Earth Stealth Underworld Evolution asm. |

From what heard House of Flying Daggers had Atrocious video transfer I say they redo that. Sony showed a lot of class by offering a new free re-mastered version of The Fifth Element to people who bought the 25 gig disk.

BHD looks absolutely stunning. No complaints here.
Paidgeek has said that the master is horrible and that no matter what they do, they can't make the film look any better on HD. |

BHD does not need to be re-done. It's PQ is awesome.
Also....I'm getting tired of people dissing the Mpeg 2 codec. Once and for all, ANY codec can be spectacular or horrible depending upon the original source and transfer. Don't blame the codec for the poor source or transfer. |

BHD looks the way it did in the movies. Too many now want a shiny polished look. The good and bad thing about HD movies, youll see it how the director intended.
Like the grain in collateral, I love that. |

i'm holding off on getting BHD on BD right now, so i won't comment on PQ. i've already got the 153min extended cut DVD, but the BD is only the 144min cut. i find this somewhat dissappointing, why not include the extra 9 minutes?
