I think we'll see brighter and brighter displays. For projectors the best option will likely be the Radiance Pro (which is VERY expensive) as they will be doing frame by frame in the near future. Another option is MadVR which will also be getting to that level as well. But this is a great solution for the money.

I just want a tab tension electric oled screen at 100+". I've thought about messing with madvr but as you said the 820 is pretty good for the money.

I find it interesting that apparently the European UB824 reportedly does allow this, despite it not being mentioned in the User Manual. That gives some hope of it being true for the UB820 as well.

If it does, this player will have even greater interest to me.

Would greatly appreciate somebody checking on this.
On the UB824 it's under:
Option - Operation menu - Subtitle settings

From what I read in this forum (and others) the UB820 and UB824 appear to be identical for all practical purposes.

Much appreciated.

I can see what you're talking about in the UB824 manual; it just doesn't provide any additional detail on precisely what settings can be adjusted.

But the fact that your UB824 does have this function is very encouraging, and I agree that the UB820 is likely to function the exact same way.

Looking more and more like this player could be a great addition to my system.

Thanks again for your replies.

I'm planning on purchasing the 820 and just wanted to bump this.

In another thread, Geoff D reported that while viewing SD Evaluation test patterns, namely the CUE 24 and the Chroma Multiburst, he observed (and Elwaylite concurred) that the Panasonic DMP-UB200's output was "really weird and jagged, like it's missing alternate lines or something." Member d514 repeated the tests on the Panasonic DMP-UB700 and observed the same poor results.

My preference would be to have only one disc player in the theater rack. However if the DP-UB820 de-interlaces as poorly as last year's models, then I'd also keep my current player in the setup for DVD's.

If anyone has the time or inclination to take evaluate this, I, for one, would be appreciative.

I have the discs, I can check when I get home. I don't watch anything less than 1080p really so its not a big deal, but I have both Spears discs.

High-Def Digest has a review of the 820 here.

Wonder if Kris will have a review in Sound & Vision?

After reading that review, I just unloaded my Oppo on ebay and hopefully I'll receive my UB820 sometime within the next week or two. I exchanged emails the other day with Robert and was happy to find he's just as gracious and knowledgeable off-forum as he is on.

I did the same thing and am very happy with the decision. The 820 is the real deal.

I agree, Robert is the real deal. I appreciate what he contributes to the discussion here and obviously as a retailer.

I checked the cue 24s on Spears and Munsil 2. They still look funky.

That's a good review from High Def Digest. I also like what they did with the new site presentation.
It's quick too to navigate, unlike that other site from hell.

For LG 2017 OLED users with this player, here are my final settings with most of the titles (hopefully I won't touch these again...)

Dynamic Contrast on the TV is set to "OFF"

On the UB820

HDR Optimizer : On
Dynamic Range Adjustment : +6
Brightness : 0
Tone Curve White : +2
Tone Curve Black : -3

The goal here was to match the Dynamic contrast of the TV (which is their "Active HDR", the TV's internal Dynamic Tone Mapping). This was used to get the right Black Curve because when you get to +6 on the Dynamic Range Adjustment, it tends to slightly wash out the blacks, so I found -3 matched the effect of the Tv's Tone Mapping, and made them even smoothier, and better.

For the White curve, I used several shots of clouds on various titles (mainly Wonder Woman and SpiderMan Homecoming), and noticed that anything above +5 on the Dynamic Range Adjustment, begin to clip the Whites data (clouds started to fade out). BUT, +6 seems to be the level of intensity operated by the Tv's Tone Mapping, and to maintain that without clipping, bringing the White curve to +2 brought back those missings clouds, without sacrificing picture intensity.

Those tweaking possibilities on that player are such a joy. But now, I'm DONE !
Played the Ferry scene in Spiderman after that, and the Thor/Hulk dual in Ragnarok: not touching any settings AGAIN !

Remember for any other Oled users, this would work for the 2017 LG models.
Settings might be completely different for 2016 or 2018 ones, and even more different for TV's from other brands.
These are my "subjective" HDR settings so they might not work for your taste, but the only thing I tried to achieve was to match the TV's tone mapping, so that the player will do the work instead, and since it has better capabilities in that area, the results are even better especially thanks to the HDR optimizer (keeping color values where they should, especially in highlights).

Anyway, i'm off watching Blade Runner

Keep up the good stuff guys !

Interesting to see people start to mess with black and white tone curve controls. It's funny that the onscreen menu recommends leaving them at 0. But I found similar to you, that adjusting the dynamic range control can wash things out a bit and using those 2 controls you can dial the blacks back down and bring back some white detail with the white control. I haven't messed with too extensively but I think it's worth a go. I need to get a UHD pattern disc to check for black/white clipping when using those controls

As we all know, it is gonna totally depend on display and calibration. My A8F is pro calibrated, and with OLED selected and HDR Opt just ON, and all zero's, HDR blu-ray looks GREAT, same with Netflix. So I am not messing with it anymore.

Been sticking with those "0" values since the beginning, because of those menu recommendations ! But I thought it was worth a try since I've been noticing this wash out. Tweaking those curves did help a lot.
Would love to get a UHD pattern disc in the future, but right now, i'm gonna enjoy what I ended up with after NUMEROUS tryouts...

I'm not surprised, since Sony's tone mapping seems rather different than Lg's
That was the case for last year's A1 anyway...

Yeah, and it is still the same with the A8F. I prefer the sony method to be honest, but not the 820 offers me a way to get some highlights back in detail.

Like I said earlier, Predators was
