I thought one of the most immersive sound mixes I heard in Atmos (12-channel and Auro) was 'Everest'. While the IMAX mix was aggressive, the use and where sound moved around in the Atmos auditorium was a completely different and better experience; music was wide and often drifted off the screen to beautiful effect, a wind vortex that you could hear above did this circular effect. In my thoughts on IMAX, I think sometimes the audio can be so loud that as a result they overpower the overhead sound cues. Interestingly, the 12-channel mix of 'Sully' was superior over the Dolby Atmos mix I heard. |

Still frustrated IMAX 3D for Fallout wasn't a thing in the US. IMAX is one of the few systems bright enough to pull off 3D extremely well. |

Heh. I recently saw my first-ever Atmos movie in the cinema (Skyscraper) and all throughout the film I was like "is that it?". Now, one might argue that the mix wasn't the greatest...but then the myriad of Dolby intros at the head of the film were also just as lacking in overt height information. Now I feel so much better at not going gaga for all that shit anymore, I mean I do still want decently mastered audio on disc with proper dynamic range and whatnot, as well as an original mix wherever possible, but as for all this bajillion speakers malarkey? I'm out. |

I'm right there with you, Geoff. I don't think there will ever be a total visual and audio immersive experience like Dunkirk in my life again, although Interstellar in 15/70 was pretty damn close.
You just can't replicate that at home in either category and honestly that's the way it should be. The theater experience should be special and something to aspire to. With the exception of the 15/70 IMAX and Dolby Cinema screens or whenever I catch a good 35mm or 70mm print at my local arthouse theater (Lawrence 70mm w/ 6ch mag track and 2001 in 70mm were lovely, as was RoboCop in 35mm) I have always thought to myself that my setup at home was better. So I rarely go to the standard DCP shows because almost all of the theaters around here show 2D movies with the 3D polarizer in palace, making for a blurry dim mess that I pay $12 for. No thanks. As for Atmos, I would still like to try hearing it at home. I rarely hear the surrounds in the theaters, IMAX included, much of the time. But when I get my surrounds aligned right at home, I can hear them clearly and they make a difference. Someday I'll have l my own place where I can get a 7.2.4 setup, but 5.1 is still pretty damn good. So are stereo or mono tracks if they're done well. I enjoy having a soundstage, and years of vinyl playback prove just how damn enveloping a wall of sound can be from simple stereo playback. Maybe Atmos is largely hype (it seems that way in the theater IMHO) but I'll reserve judgement for now until I get it at home. It certainly doesn't hurt to have the option though. |

Like Interstellar, I saw Dunkirk first in 70mm and then IMAX, and unlike Interstellar where the mixes had some clear differences, it sounded pretty similar and great in both formats, albeit I do think there were a few sound effects which went into the too loud territory.
I definitely had a "that's all it is" first reaction to Atmos with X-Men: Days of Future Past, but once I view it more as a compliment then some radical improvement to sound (7.1 and even 5.1 can absolutely still deliver), and see some titles which use it better (Paddington 2 was one of the most recent films I saw in Atmos, and really liked how they incorporated Atmos in that mix), it is a nice little bonus to have. I do think IMAX 12 channel is the best sound system I've ever heard: I've seen about 11 titles in Atmos and roughly double that in 12 channel, Force Awakens is one film I saw in both and I preferred the IMAX mix (again had an issue with some sound effects being too loud in Atmos IMO, and I think the overhead sounds came across better in IMAX, both were of course better than the 5.1 I first saw the film in). Though funny enough I wanted to take someone along to IMAX digital showing of Thor Ragnarok to show the renovations they had done, and I was recently blown away by the sound of Blade Runner: The Final Cut in 12 channel there, but that proved to be a test case for how restrained some of Disney's "immersive" mixes are, so I do think the film itself is probably the biggest factor. |

^You know, as much as I like the Marvel movies, I'm simply not interested enough to see them again in the theater.
I'd easily pay $200 if they did a Nolan 70mm IMAX presentation with all his films. One per day or something. |

I saw Interstellar in 15/70, would love to see it again in the full frame IMAX presentation at the Laser IMAX. The contrast, black levels, clarity, color, everything was just pretty much perfect for Dunkirk. Now don't get me wrong, I still LOVED seeing it in 15/70 IMAX with the 6-channel presentation and feel it was the 2nd best way to see Dunkirk, but seeing it in both within a few days of each other allowed me to realize just how stunning the new IMAX system is. Wowza. I knew it was good as I'd seen The Force Awakens in Toronto and so got the one full AR scene (Escape from Jakku) in 3D (felt like I wasn't wearing glasses it was so bright and clear) but seeing a Nolan movie with so much more IMAX AR scenes, damn. Sign me up. It's a 90 min drive so I won't leap to go to Toronto for flicks like Avengers shot with the digital IMAX camera in 1.90:1, but for movies done with full film IMAX I'll absolutely consider it and for Nolan it's a must. Crap, I forgot about MI Fallout. I need to check if TO has any screenings left... EDIT - NM, I was assuming it had some 1.43:1 scenes like the Brad Bird one, I will wait and hope the Blu-ray has the shifting AR. Should probably still go see this in the Canadian UltraAVX (4K, Atmos) Last edited by dobyblue; 08-10-2018 at 08:13 PM. |

AMC Empire and Kips Bay do have tickets on sale, so far looks like only a few tickets sold per showing, so not going super fast like Dark Knight was and thankfully gives some time to plan it out. I would like to see Iron Man 1 in IMAX, and then probably one more. Probably either The First Avenger (like Iron Man it's new to IMAX, though showing just once on early Friday afternoon may not be doable with work) or Thor 1 (if you discount the recent Ant-Man and the Wasp which I've seen in IMAX anyway, it's the only Marvel Studios movie I've seen just once, and was planning on seeing it again soon albeit at home). |

Apparently Iron Man 1, according to the IMAX site, will have 1.90 scenes...

Probably material created for open matte home viewings, but that's definitely a surprise for a re-release done in IMAX. Certainly does affect where I would see the film, as I would make sure to see it at the Empire rather than Kips Bay (it's scope screen is great for most IMAX releases, but means you don't get any expanded image area or titles taller than that)
