in the 21th century: i think subtitles are essential and necessary - even myself Need sometime subtitles - specially when I'm watching a movie in english (Need english subtitles) or French (Need French subtitles) or german (Need german subtitles).

Yes, the old Sony DVD had "dubtitles", i.e. the subtitles were captions of the English dub, not a translation of the Japanese dialogue.

Stopped following this Sony MOD line after reading about BD-Rs being used for Neighbors, Marie Antoinette, and Real Genius. Was unaware of them changing over to pressed discs. Will get this then too if that’s the case. I’d reconsider the others mentioned above as well...
