But it’s also very telling you quote MSRP, which as you and everyone knows, will be discounted by retailers. So you aren’t paying $230, but hey, I guess you think it helps your “argument” to quote prices no one will ever pay. Please.
Then why is that 70s show that Mill Creek has released twice still at priced at the MSRP? Yeah I know it cost money to remaster a show but people only asked for the show not all the other crap they did and with this being released by Mill Creek I highly doubt it would even be worth buying. I’m not being cheap $230 is nothing to me hell my electric bill a month is more then that.

I’m always amazed at how many folks around here don’t seem to understand the concept of MSRPs. The $230 price point for The Shield is only the MSRP. While $230 is already a fair price, you wouldn’t actually end up paying that. Heck, it’s already priced at $118.29 at Target.

The $230 price point is mostly reflective of the high cost of completely rescanning and remastering the show from the ground up, rather than “all the other crap” such as interviews.

Also, upon announcement, I believe the MSRP of That 70s Show was around $150 and that was a show which had preexisting HD masters (I think).

But I find that the shots looking better were more than just occasional. A lot more.

Of course it all comes down to personal preferences.
I’d rather watch The X-Files S1-2 closer to the original intention, without losing information that gets cropped.
Got no problem with black bars at the sides of the screen with a 1.33:1 transfer.
S3 and S4 lost almost no information top and bottom and was simply opened up. It wasn’t cropped to fit the screen, so I am content to watch it that way, despite it originally being broadcast full frame.

But for S1-2 of The X-Files (screenshot comparisons below) we gain a bit of information left and right, but lose so much information that is cropped from the top or bottom.
The true intention, and much of the shot, is missing (like for example, the intention to show Mulder standing in the pouring rain), and you often find heads cropped and hands/feet missing, which makes the framing look cramped.

But with Season 3 and 4 (screenshots below), we can see that when the picture is opened up, while we get extra info left and right, but we lose only the tiniest bit of info from the top or bottom, which is neglible.
In the case of S3-4 of The X-Files, they were futureproofed for 1.78:1 TV broadcasts.

I hope that The Shield was future proofed, as in the screenshot examples of S3-4 of The X-Files, so we don’t get a crop job as bad as those first two seasons of The X-Files.

Mill Creek completely screwed up the release of That 70s show. They don’t have the right music on a few episodes and they don’t have the original final episode of the series they’ve released the Bluray twice and both Verizon of it are screwed up to the points it’s not worth watching. Sony was stupid to give Mill Creek The Shield to release cause I haven’t seen one tv show that they’ve released that wasn’t screwed up.

You can get the dvd and compare it right now. I would presume the BDs wouldn't change much from the dvds, if at all.

edit: Amazon got that price guarentee right? If you preorder and it falls bellow what you initially paid, your card won't be drawn for the full amount.

In Australia, there’s a BluRay player from the brand “Laser” that only manufactures region-free BluRay players. Pretty cheap too. Is there such a thing in Europe?

At the moment I am using a Sony BDP-S3500 BluRay Player which is region-free. Usually they cost around $150 for a Region B player but I bought it on eBay for $300 from a place that chips them to play every region (only thing is I can’t update the software on the player as it reverts it back to region b only). A fair bit of money to pay but I have a lot of Region-free blurays. Maybe something to consider in the future if The Shield is only Region A.

It really has nothing to do with "future proofing" because all the compositions were made for 4x3. So anything else kills those compositions, which is why all those shows "opened up" for 16x9 have boring dead space on the sides and people standing right in the center. It looks laughable bad, but unfortunately, people would rather fill their screens than respect the OAR.

The screens Rick Grimes posted about the later seasons of X-files don't look worse in 16:9 than 4:3. I would say they are an improvement. This is my subjective view. I can also spot the difference of the earliest seasons of X-files compared to the later ones.

Friday Night Lights is also listed as Region A, but it plays perfectly fine on a Region B player.

I emailed Mill Creek about the region lock and they said:

Unfortunately, we do not have the distribution rights for this product in the Region B format.
So... fingers crossed for Sony releasing it in EU??

OR get yourself a Multi-Region player

OR better yet, a Region A player!

I imported a US model Sony 5 years back and have had to use a Step-Down transformer (to convert 240v to 110v).

Nowadays, it is a lot easier. Many Blu-Ray players (even the Sony UBP-X700 UHD player) have an external transformer, so that they can be built to 110v-240v/50-60hz specs.
Thus, you can then source a US model and plug a UK/EU transformer into the back of the player, before it goes into the wall socket.

Once you go the “A” way, you will never look back. It opens up your viewing options for BD so much more.

I am thankful that Ultra-HD does not have Region codes, despite the fact that accompanying BDs are locked... Especially anything from Lionsgate.

PS. Mill Creek (The Shield distributors) is notorious for Region Locking to A. If it’s Mill Creek, it’s Region A (bought US Quantum Leap and Miami Vice to play on my US model).

They do to me, and to most people who know compositions and make compositions for a living.

As I've said many times, we don't call for films to be cropped or "opened up", so there's no reason TV shows should be, either. Period. That's pretty much the end of story and there's absolutely no argument against that.
