Denzel Washington gives the kind of powerful and impassioned performance as Tripp that naturally gets the most attention in a movie. His truculent character may also be the most audience relatable in the film; he's a volatile man who wants payback for the treatment of both himself and his people, and doesn't hold any of his emotions in check. Broderick gives a far more restrained performance (and by all accounts, historically accurate). His Col. Shaw is measured, reserved and not a natural leader, but beneath that diffidence is a steely resolve; I think it's a beautifully nuanced and touching performance. Both actors are superb, but I believe Washington was always going to get that Oscar nod over his fellow castmates.

This is a beauty of a historical film. Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher and Jihmi Kennedy are as terrific as Washington and Broderick. The cinematography by Freddie Francis and music by James Horner (a personal favorite) are likewise excellent. I saw this twice theatrically in early 1990, and still rate it as one of the most stirring war films I've ever seen. "Give 'em hell, 54th!"

I really need to buy this, but I'll hold off in case there is a UHD release. It's been a while since I've seen it. I'm not a fan of war films, but this is indeed filled with top caliber performances and it's beautifully told.

It's now in 4K at iTunes. I checked UK and Finnish iTunes. It's SDR only at the moment but probably will be upgraded to DV or HDR10 when and if UHD BD is released.

I can not wait to see the final battle sequence in HDR. That sequence is absolutely stunning with the chaotic barrages of muzzle fire, cannons, explosions and the theatrical use of focused red lighting through the massive haze of smoke.

I will already be prepared to squint as someone always seems to be cutting onions when that part comes on.

Glory will be 30 this year. Hopefully a 4k master will be made (physical copy) with HDR. This a perfect movie for 4k.

Indeed, looking at their catalog releases to UHD BD over the past year (including yesterday's announcement of a 35th anni Karate Kid (1984) UHD BD streeting in April), Sony clearly likes to tie their releases to an anni. Although not labeled as such, I now note that even the film's bow on 1080 BD happened 10 years ago this June in its 20th anni year.
