I remember when vhs first came out and how cool it was to watch a rented movie in the early 80's ,and then dvds came along and WOW what a change,no more rewinding ,chapters, clear picture pause . Now we have bluray ,can it get any better ? I would like to see 3D technology eventully done right for a change .

Well Blu-ray doesn't give us lossless video for one thing. And 1080p is technically a low resolution compared to the amount of detail you can produce from 35mm film for instance. Let alone 65mm or 70mm film. We are only seeing a fraction of that detail with Blu-ray.

Will these higher resolutions fit on higher capacity and multiple layer BDs...so current players can read them, with a few firmware updates?

Current players not a chance. Especially in regards to lossless video. Thats something that would require a whole new format. Even then, don't expect lossless video in a long, LONG time.

Agreed with all of the above in the way of lossless video.
Out of curiosity, I did a basic calculation with basic figures. Here we go. A basic, uncompressed, pixel for pixel image at 1080H x 1920"W is (give or take a few bytes) 6.072 MB is size, so: 1 Frame = 6.072 MB* 1 Second = 145.278 MB (24 frames/sec.) 1 Minute = 8.74368 GB 2 Hour Movie = 1.0494216 TB (yes, just over 1 terabyte) *Calculated as a 1080x1920 RGB bitmap at 16.7 million color-depth. Someone please correct me if those calculations are wrong, but as you can see, this is so far beyond the current 50GB dual-layer BD form factor that uncompressed, lossless video is completely out of the equation. Uncompressed lossless video has a way to go, and with the technology running toward image size increases before anything else, we will likely see larger resolutions before any form of lossless video. We can certainly expect the possibility of more efficient compression algorithms/codecs in the future, and maybe some sort of lossless video compression (like lossless audio compression), but lossy will be around for some time because the gain in storage efficiency pays very large dividends, and consumers are happy with the video quality they are seeing with this technology. |

what about 4 layer (100GB) blu ray discs? Would they take off?
Would that mean they would re release alot of movies in higher quality (bit rate) again? |

It's called HVD. Read about it. It holds up to 3.9 TB. Blows Blu Ray out of the water.
