Does anyone know if the 820 is mapping SDR peak white value to 235 or 255?

I am having a issue with getting surround sound using the ub820 right now I have a LG LAS950M SoundBar with the added rear speakers. The UB820 is hooked up to the SoundBar using the HDMI audio out I get sound fine until I link the rear speakers. Any ideas?

OK so I tested this scene and with bt2020 sdr, on/of makes zero difference. With bt2020 hdr I can see on/off working. My projector doesn't support hdr so everything looks desaturated forcing hdr, but I can see the on/ off control working.

Did you take these screen shots in sdr bt2020 or hdr bt2020?

Do you ever see the system gamma adjustment slider? From what I can tell that control may only be on the ub9000.

I’ve already posted on the SDR2020 and why with some titles there will be no difference between HdR optimizer on and off. Infinity Wars is a 1000 nit title. So with optimizer on it tone maps to 1000 nits based on the metadata. If you turn optimizer off with the SDR2020 mode it defaults to a 1000 nit tone map since the vast majority of titles are 1000 nits. So there would be no difference here.

The slider you are referring to is the slider right below the optimizer on/off that you can see in the picture from the post above.

Kris,

I read your post about this. What title / scene can I use to see the optimizer on doing something in sdr bt2020. I chose the scene from infinity wars I posted above from another user showing a difference between on and off. I don't know if he was outputting sdr or hdr. If I force hdr output I can see a difference between on and off. So that is why I wasn't sure if the optimizer on/off behaves differently in hdr vs sdr output. And if it does I'm trying to find a scene to see it working.

Also the system gamma adjustment seems to be an additional slider available on the ub9000 only. It has shown up on menu pictures of the ub9000 optimizer menu. Also there is a 3rd party firmware that says it unlocks additional features on the 820 thst are enabled in the 9000 including the system gamma slider.

https://www.regionfreedom.com/index....pc#advfeatures

Edit: So I looked at blade runner 2049 and fantastic beasts and on those titles mastered at over 1000 nits I could see the optimizer on and off working. So if the above pictures of avengers infinity wars is showing that control working it might be because the user was outputting hdr? Basically does the optimizer on off control work differently for titles mastered at 1000 nits when outputting sdr vs hdr? And when outputting sdr bt2020 what does the 820 map peak white to? 235 or 255?

I also still think system gamma must only be on the ub9000.

The user was using HDR and set display to projector. That means the player was tone mapping for a 1000 nit title to a 500 nit output, so it will be different.

Peak white should be mapped to 235 but I’ve asked my engineering contact for confirmation.

Thanks Kris, that makes sense. I thought I had tried some titles over 1000 nits but I had to recheck the spreadsheet to find a few that definitely are.

Let us know what you find out about peak mapping.

If you get your hands on a ub9000 let us know if it has the additional system gamma control.

The main question before I take the upgrade, can you turn DV off like HLG, HDR10+, etc.?

Crap, I could not see the spoiler above, thanks for posting images that it can be turned off.

I want the update mainly because it adds Amazon.

Maybe there is more to the certification? I am still shocked HDR Optimizer works with Netflix, usually you are locked out of a lot of player settings when the App is working. Hopefully it works with Amazon too.

They are mapping the intended signal based on the metadata into the 235 range, but have a slight amount of headroom if you are using 255. So you're safe either way.

Thanks Kris,

I clip at 235 to preserve every precious bit of light, realizing that even with BD I may occasionally clip something. It's a tradeoff.
