If they really want to celebrate Mickey, they would develop a feature animation around him and his gang. Way back when they had yet to have a 50th animated feature it was supposed to be something called The Search for Mickey in which Mickey went missing and Basil of Baker Street (from The Great Mouse Detective) had to investigate by questioning characters from all of Disney's animated classics. It sounds like a great idea and I don't understand why they dumped it.

Michael Eisner wanted to make a segment of Fantasia 2000 with all the Disney characters and their children walking by the screen to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance". The surviving animators from the original Fantasia were invited over to view the story reel. It did not go well. Ward Kimball (bless him), said, "This is the biggest piece of @#$% I've ever seen!" Later, Roy had to tell Eisner he couldn't get anyone to work on the short because everybody hated it. Eisner angrily relented, but demanded the music stay in the film. Hence -- Donald Duck's "Pomp and Circumstance" sequence (which is actually quite charming -- not up there with anything from the original Fantasia, but still charming).

Anyway, Basil trying to find Mickey by talking to a lot of Disney characters sounds more like product placement than a story. Sounds more like a "House of Mouse" episode, right?

I believe that is what the idea directly morphed into. But what a poor substitute. The animation is terrible. Something about mixing all the characters from different movies has always appealed to me. Aside from desperately wanting The Search for Mickey to be a reality, I have always wanted Disney World to install a dark ride that takes you through scenes from ALL of the animated films...even Black Cauldron. LOL.

There are dozens of new Mickey Mouse cartoons on the Mickey Shorts channel on YouTube.

I worked at Disney Interactive when they launched Epic Mickey on Wii.

Perhaps it was an in house urban myth, but the supposed reasoning behind not doing a Mickey feature is they fear it would hurt his brand if it doesn't make $400 million domestically. It would open too many questions if it wasn't an unqualified success. They preferred sprinkling him through their products without tying him to a franchise flagpole film which they see as an unnecessary risk at this point. Not sure if true, but it was generally accepted there.

I'm late to the party on this one, but I'm really excited for this release. My 2 young kids love Mickey (they watch MM Clubhouse and Mickey and the Roadster Racers), and they love watching the shorts that usually accompany Disney releases. Looks like a great compilation to add to our Disney collection.

I consulted for Disney Interactive just after Epic Mickey II was released. That game was a hot mess, and everyone knew it. It's the worst game I own.

I left shortly before that went down. The best game they put out while I was there was Toy Story 3. The sandbox game on that release is basically the protoype for Disney Infinity. I cannot rec it enough, still to this day it's FUN.
