would the spidey films be coming individually too? Look at the Matrix trilogy and how that 'sold', folk might just want to buy one at a time rather than a boxy

Default Paidgeek, longstanding issues with PS3 and Mits WD-65732

Paidgeek, I know I've asked this before, but I thought I'd try again. There is a strange compatability issue between the PS3 and the Mits WD-65732 as far as 1080p is concerned. The Mits seems best suited for 1080p when the PS3 is set to RGB Full; all other resolutions look extremely dark, however. The opposite is true when the PS3 is set to RGB Limited; all other resolutions look fine, but 1080p looks washed out. Ordinarily, a player will upconvert SD BD extras to 1080p and deinterlace 1080i BD content to 1080p, so the issue of different colorspaces with this TV never comes up. However, the PS3 does not do any of these things, outputting any BD content in its native resolution only. (Yes, the PS3 now upscales SD DVDs, but that does not extend to SD content on BDs). The end result is that I constantly have to switch colorspaces on the fly, depending on the native resolution of the BD video I'm watching. Not ideal, since I have a "set it and forget it" kind of mentality.

Since a "forced 24Hz" option has just been added to the PS3 due to compatability issues with existing equipment, can similar "forced RGB Full," "forced RGB Limited" or "forced 1080p output" settings be a possibility? Is there anyone at Sony you can point me to so I can take this further? I know this is a known issue with other Mits owners, so any solution to this problem would be appreciated by many people. Thanks.

What's the idea behind the Spider-man HiDef Trilogy set? Specifically, why does Spidey-3 get the 2-disc version but Spidey1-2 didn't?
Obviously not PG, but if I had to guess, it's because Spidey 1 and 2 bonus material was created SD, and therefore fit on 1 disc, and the Spidey 3 stuff is all HD

As far as Darin's question about sales in Japan I think this link should be rather illustrative:

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...0725/wds05.jpg

The left side is set-top recorders, and the right side is blank media. I've been following things and that seems to be pretty representative of the ROM market as well. A quick check at Amazon.co.jp reveals that their top HD DVD title (miami vice) has a sales ranking of 1315. There's 17 BD titles that have better numbers, and it just goes downhill for HD DVD from there. There is no format war in Japan for all points and purposes - it's a rout. Even Bandai Visual who initially were very gung-ho about HD DVD, have stopped announcing HD DVDs and seem to have gone Blu-ray only for their Japanese releases. So much for their relationship with Memory-Tech.
Wow, that's hardware on the left, correct?

Complete rout. It's over in Japan. It's time for Universal to decide if it is in the disc business there.

Indeed. I can't read one scrap of Japanese or any other foreign language for the most part, but those pictures don't need any translations whatsoever.

Top of the graph is "Market Share"

Left side is "Recorder"

Right is Software

Blu owns 96% of the market in Japan. Bandai in fact just solicited a new round of Blu without any HD counterparts, when originally they were HD exclusive

This is GREAT news. I'm anxiously awaiting Lawrence of Arabia in beautiful High Definition.

Thanks, Paidgeek, for all of your posts here.

What's to say? Most people overlooked the significance of the Hitachi BD camcorder. BD is an infrastrucure for CE companies, not just a movie distribution format. So expect to see several BD camcorders and "very interesting" accessories this year. Where will the HD DVD camcorders come from? And don't forget the close ties between AVCHD and BD. But I digress...

From what I see, BD stand-alone player sales rate will surpass HD DVD stand-alone player sales rate later this year, even at the higher BD player prices. So Chinese BD players and several additional non-Chinese BD player manufacturers are just icing on the cake.

As an aside, there’s alot of talk about q4 on all the forums. I expect HD DVD to blow their wad on q4 and have nothing left for the proverbial 5th quarter.
Q5 and Q6 will even more interesting for BD. Lots of surprises.

Do you anticipate any troubles for Chinese companies getting approval by the BDA to release BD players from themselves (not just manufactured by them)? One reason I ask is it seems like this is something that Universal wants and I'm wondering if a deal could be proposed where Universal goes neutral and the BDA approves some Chinese companies that Universal can be confident will bring the prices of standalone players down.

paidgeek,

Now that the Spiderman Trilogy has been announced, can you please confirm the audio specs for each movie? Will TrueHd on Spidey3 be 20bit and PCM 16bit? Will 1 & 2 have the same audio options and bit depths?

Thanks. Cannot wait til October 30th!!!

I agree. Others have argued me about HDDVD and player sales. People continue too be narrow sighted about each format. I support BR because its a better format, forget about the studios.

When I posted the Hitachi article in another forum noone seems interested. The camcorders adoption of BR is another way to secure the format, people are too worried about the studio wars.

Paidgeek,

I have two questions regarding the Spider-Man Trilogy Boxset. Do the movies come in individual blu-ray cases like the matrix trilogy (on hd dvd) or one big case for all movies? (I like it when all the cases look the same )

How about region coding? Will all three movies be coded All Region? (Would be nice to buy the US version if Sony sweden doesn't release the boxset)

Keep up the good work!

It's a convergence piece of technology. The tidbits coming out paint that picture more and more. PS3 with DVR technology? BD camcorders with AVCHD? Copious amounts of burners for the market and lots of ways to integrate things.

I continue to hope that Sony someday offers a "CE" verson of the PS3 ala a Tivo. Give me a black box with bluetooth that lets it play games and add external storage for DVR/ATSC tuning and I'll toss out everything I own for equipment beyond the TV and receiver.
