It's called "price gouging".

Thirty bucks is the new norm. Shout is obviously taking a page from the likes of Synapse, Code Red and all the indies who charge in the $30 range. Personally, I'm willing to pay a little more to support these guys if it means keeping physical media afloat a few more years. I just won't be able to splurge on titles I'm on the fence about and my blind buying will be cut to almost nothing. Sign of the times, folks.

It's not the new norm. Charging higher prices isn't going to keep physical media afloat, it's going to help sink it. People are going to buy fewer titles or none at all. If people don't support their new pricing scheme, then they will eventually get the message, and adjust their pricing model accordingly. As long as people support them by paying those exorbitant prices, then they will continue to charge those prices. It's as simple as that.

I do think in the end it will have a negative effect on overall sales. Like some have mentioned, they may be on the fence about a particular purchase, but with that purchase being the same normal price they have become accustomed to, they were buying it whereas now I think a lot will not eventually.

I mean.......$30-$35 for a movie that has been around for decades is a lot of money. And yeah, they do put a lot into it which is why I buy so many but again.....I can wait to see a film I have been watching for 20 years already and save.

Anyways

Roll your eyes all you want but this really is the new norm. Boycotts don't work, either. Has consumer griping made any kind of dent in pricing? I haven't seen it. All I see are prices going up. Shout's new prices are high, yes, but they apply primarily to preorders through Shout's webshop and Amazon for a limited time. People are just going to have to be a little patient and wait a bit. Also, if you look around you'll find some of these new titles cheaper elsewhere. I grabbed a copy of The Unborn at BB online for the "regular" price of $22.99 with free shipping.

I really don't think it's greed or pricing related. Shout pricing is what it is. They already try to offer incentives to order through them directly, whether it's early access or promo items. Amazon almost always decreases prices based on competitors (right now there are none). My guess is that Shout cut others off until they can get better processes in place to prevent movies from hitting the public before they're supposed to. This could be based on their preference, or maybe it's due to their licensing agreements. Who knows. As I've mentioned before, do you think Activision would be happy about Gamestop sending out the new Call of Duty a week before they're supposed to? Unfortunately, that's what was happening with some of these third party sellers (according to the ones here bragging about getting it early).

I have faith it will be fixed. Be patient.

I asked them about what Diabolik said and this is their response.

Higher prices will not not drive sales up, nor will the misguided idea that supporting Scream by embracing this "new norm" as you call it, help keep physical media afloat. If people refuse to pay those prices and buy fewer titles or none at all, Scream will eventually feel the business impact of customer dissatisfaction and diminished sales, and then in response will likely have to adjust their business practices and pricing model if they want to remain in business in the long term. That's what I'm saying.

That's the same cut/paste canned response they've given for weeks.

What I'm unhappy about is I haven't seen a new Shout/Scream title stocked on the floor at Best Buy in a while. I was greatly enjoying buying titles in person and now it appears that this trend is being reversed

yeah i don't have that many screams in my collection, but the newer releases hitting 14.99-16.99 on release day was my sweet spot if i NEEDED the title asap (usually from best buy).

oh well! better for my wallet.

The It's Alive Trilogy apparently now in BB stores, for $24.99. People here have reported finding it. Of course my local store doesn't have it.

Don't feel bad I show none available for pick-up within 250 miles of Chicago and that's between like 12 Best Buy stores

You were lucky. My nearest locations never seemed to get the bigger/more desirable releases in store. Every so often, one of the even more obscure titles would show up elsewhere in the racks (not in the New Release section) but only one or two copies. Well, other than some of the Steelbook double dips. Those did show up on street date.

I think the last time I saw a new, BIG Scream Factory release at my nearest store was ROTLD. Again, 2 copies only. And was...23? 24? Definitely not a release week sale of 15-16.

I've spotted copies of Misery, Land of the Dead and even the It's Alive Trilogy at my nearest BB store. There have been others over the past year as well. Kind of a nice surprise to see these among the zillion copies of Avengers Infinity

I'm always willing to support labels I like & SF is one of them. I only pre order titles I really want though from their site. Any others I'm happy to wait for a better price on. I only have 6 titles pre ordered with them right now, the 6 I wanted most.

That is exactly what I did. When they had the comic-con sale I locked in the 4 releases I couldn't wait for. As for the rest, I'm utilizing the price tracker here and when I get a notification one has hit a price I'm willing to spend, I buy it. If it doesn't get to a price I set for myself, then it doesn't get added to my collection...

There decision to enter into expensive licensing agreements with the studios does not equal my obligation to support them. Thankfully for them, they appear to have enough of you drinking the Kool-Aid.
