The character is very smart. Her left-brain attributes of logic, facts, detail, practicality, comprehension, language, strategy, etc. are all exceptional. The writers contrast those qualities against her right-brain deficiencies in feeling, philosophy, spirituality, and especially personal relationships.

This smart but flawed character becomes very human -- and believable -- when she must draw upon all of these attributes, for better or worse, when thrust into extreme circumstances.

Much as with Andy Sipowicz, but a different mix of strengths and weaknesses.

Smart yes. Perfect no.

Patrick Jane would play him like he's a playschool toy.

Heres what I think.

1) Patrick Jane (The Mentalist)
2) Dr. House (House)
3) Sheldon Cooper (The Big Bang Theory)
4) Shawn Spencer (Psych)
5) Cal Lightman (Lie to Me)

I watch from time to time House, Psych, and Monk. Have to go

Monk
Shawn(Psych)
House

House 3rd because the writers make it that way. Almost every episode is him getting the diagnosis wrong until the end. Guess thats what makes it good. And he's a smart a**

Monk over Shawn!? No way!! Monk is just a good detective but Shawn has the mental capacity of a Genius. But there all nothing compared to the mentalist.

MacGyver. He could turn your posts in this forum into a bomb to beat the bad guy, save the damsel in distress, and save the day.

Ooh, ooh!!!

I forgot Maddie Hayes and David Addison -- Moonlighting (1985-1989)

...more so as the pair than individually. They were written very well.

If there is a character smarter than Paladin, Lt. Columbo, No.6, John Steed, or Dan Briggs of the first Mission:Impossible (any of which would be tough to beat), I'd have to nominate:
Parliament Undersecretary Sir Humphrey Appleby, "Yes, Minister".

Professor John I.Q. Nerdelbaum Frink, Jr.

The Name alone should qualify him as the smartest tv character ever

But he never blew up a sun before to destroy a Goal'ud fleet of motherships. That job he leaves to Samantha Carter - SG-1.

1) Daniel Jackson
2) Samantha Carter
3) Data
4) Rodney McKay
5) Montgomery Scott
6) Angus MacGyver
7) Seven of Nine

How about that seventh place for seven of nine...
