WOW! I can't believe we're finally getting an official release of A MAN ALONE and LISBON! Ray Milland was a great actor as well as an interesting director. I've always like A MAN ALONE quite a bit and NEVER thought I'd see it on DVD, let alone Blu-ray! I've never seen LISBON, but I'll definitely be picking it up as well.
I already own Kino's great Blu-ray of Milland's other directorial effort PANIC IN YEAR ZERO! and I can't wait to add these to the collection. Thanks Kino! Quote:

The Monster That Challenged the World is fantastic, and I mean that in all sincerity. I could have sworn that I wrote a review of it at some point, but it turns out that I only acknowledged it in a short post in the dedicated thread. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Other than maybe a couple titles in October, I'm hopefully done with buying Blu-rays until Black Friday. I spent a lot more here than I thought I would. Took me forever to place an order because I felt compelled to sample the movies here I haven't seen before committing to purchasing (I'm trying to cut down on blind buys). Highway Dragnet doesn't seem to get much love, but it's an interesting companion to The Hitch-Hiker. It presents another, very different, hitchhiker story. It's only 70 minutes too, so they would make a good breezy double feature. |

A movie I'd love to see released is The Thief, a cold war noir that is notable for having no spoken dialog. I caught it on TV years ago and I kept waiting for someone to say something. After a while, I was hooked anyway. Directed by Russell Rouse and starring Ray Milland, it was a really novel way of story-telling, with no exposition other than what you see on the screen.

Oh yes, I'd almost forgotten about THE THIEF. A really cool, unique film! I'd love to see that get an official release. Make it happen, Kino!

Coming November 13th on DVD and Blu-ray!
Two Films Starring Screen Legend Carole Lombard! Made For Each Other (1939) with optional English subtitles • Brand New HD Master from a 2K Scan of the Restored Fine Grain Master • Audio Commentary by Film Historian Lee Gambin • Theatrical Trailer Nothing Sacred (1937) with optional English subtitles • Brand New HD Master from a 2K Scan of the Restored Fine Grain Master • Audio Commentary by William Wellman Jr. • Theatrical Trailer MADE FOR EACH OTHER (1939) B&W 93 Min 1.33:1 NR Carole Lombard (Nothing Sacred) delivered the best performance of her career and James Stewart (Broken Arrow) earned himself a place among the screen's most notable actors in this humor-laced marital drama that's as refreshing as a breath of spring. Attorney John Mason (Stewart) marries Jane (Lombard) after a blissful, one-day courtship. Life is wonderful... until they are overwhelmed by the demands of John's boss, his meddlesome mother and the birth of a baby. Just when the marriage is at the breaking point, a crisis turns their world upside down. Will their newfound love falter... or are the young newlyweds truly made for each other? John Cromwell (Since You Went Away) directed this wonderful David O. Selznick (I’ll Be Seeing You) production which featured wonderful performances by Charles Coburn (The More the Merrier) and Lucile Watson (Watch on the Rhine). NOTHING SACRED (1937) Color 74 Min 1.33:1 NR He's an unscrupulous newspaperman eager to exploit the story of a young woman's death by radium poisoning. She knows she's not really dying but can't pass up a free trip to New York with all the trimmings. Carole Lombard (Made for Each Other) and Fredric March (Inherit the Wind) co-star in this classic black comedy by the great William Wellman (Beau Geste). Legendary screenwriter Ben Hecht's sharply satirical screenplay, depicting the morbid nature of the scandal-hungry public, is more relevant than ever—with such wonderfully comic lines as "Doctor, I want to know the worst... we go to press in fifteen minutes!" Wellman keeps the comic pace frantic in one of the screen's cleverest screwball comedies. With a supporting cast featuring some of Hollywood's funniest character actors, including Margaret Hamilton (Driftwood), Charles Winninger (A Lady Takes a Chance) and Walter Connolly (It Happened One Night), Nothing Sacred is nothing less than hysterical. lombard.jpg |

While the new cover for Nothing Sacred is a big step up from the original Kino release, it still gives the impression that the film is some kind of drama and not a screwball comedy. No matter, this is one of the rare blus I plan to double-dip on.

True. However, on a purely aesthetic level, I like it a lot. And the tone of the poster vs the tone of the film doesn't bother me.
