I swear, every time you post this nonsense and play the victim I’m reminded of this scene from Good Morning, Vietnam. Except I’d replace blowjob with laid. Seriously dude, you bring this on yourself by making outlandish proclamations about the future. None of which have come true that wasn’t already in place

Why is making such predictions suddenly a crime? The thread is about the future of home media after all. You would think I murdered someone the way you lot go on.

You stand accused of murdering logic and reason; your wild predictions were the weapons used.

However, you have given life to much mirth and comedy as an unintended consequence. You are therefore acquitted. You are free to go once you relinquish your crystal ball.

Steedeel it's not all about you, remember I have been hammered pretty good myself. Your predictions are just way out there, and really don't make sense. We have to get back on track with Physical or Digital, and I think it all depends on Bitrates now. The 4K Providers are going with Adaptive Streaming, and it all depends on your Bandwidth. So the Codec is just one that deals with SD, HD or 4K. Making Streaming the only way to go!

How is that the only way to go? Do you think I want to be sitting in my HT watching a 4K picture turn into VHS?

If you don't wanna be hammered, don't be a nail. You, however, can not be accused of murdering logic or reason as they are both complete strangers to you.

If streaming was the "only way to go", there would be no discussion here at all. Even with "adaptive" streaming, Netflix and your adored Sony Ultra only deliver average bitrates of 16 Mbps with their 4K streams; they do not go any higher no matter what your ISP can handle. 4K streaming is not even in the same league as a 4K disc which averages 108-128 Mbps - that's a bitrate up to 8X higher than what streaming gets you.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/wher...es-and-content

And a couple of days ago you said bitrates were not that important. Do try and make up your mind.

"too many people hang their hats on these Bitrates..."

I bet VHS resolution, augmented by HDR and/or Dolby Vision, will look real nice on your smart watch and pretty fair on your smartphone. With the content being only 10 minutes long or less, you won't have to endure any of it for very long besides. It will all balance out nicely.

They're coming for your avr and speakers next , so you better find yourself a nice pair of earbuds...and fast. You will only need a mono earpiece as they will be reducing the streamed audio files to mono in order to save even more bandwidth and more $$.

I'll take this one step further; they just might eliminate audio altogether and only supply subtitles. They'll be rolling in high clover with savings that huge!

I streamed a movie tonight, The Sasquatch Gang, from Amazon Prime. It is a fun overlooked little comedy.

The video quality degraded four times into what can only be described as watercolor paints in the rain. I had to pause the streaming and then resume to get it to return to its "HD" presentation. This is an unacceptable viewing experience and it underscores why I will never rely upon streaming.

In comparison, I seldom had this sort of problem when streaming from Netflix, so I suspect the blame lies with Amazon Prime's lackluster streaming service. My ISP has been stable all evening, so I point my finger at Amazon. Even so, there are so many links in the streaming chain that can, and do, fail. Streaming will never be my first choice for watching movies or TV shows, but doing so tonight did allow me to make a purchase decision. I will likely buy this movie on disc.

This movie is available on blu-ray, but only as as MOD "burned" disc. These types of disc do not frighten me (I have had great luck with them) but some of our forum members rage against MOD discs. I would rather have a stable MOD disc, which I can back-up if I felt the need, than to rely on the dodgy streaming I received this evening.

Amazon Prime streaming is trash. I've complained about their garbage quality for some time. Even "meh" ad-filled services like Crackle and TubiTV don't look as shitty as Amazon does.

It sure looks that way.

What services perform the best and are the most stable in your experience?

Yep, cutting their bitrates imo. Don’t tell Vilya though, as he thinks it’s my latest conspiracy theory.

Once watches get universal video capability, that will be exploited. Whether it’s Vine style 10 second clips or daily serials (like Instagram stories) it is coming. I wouldn’t stick by my opinion if I didn’t think it would happen.

My Main Streaming Providers are Amazon and Vudu, and Amazon to me is Rock Solid. There are many things that you have to consider with Streaming, but the main thing is a Constant Full Bandwidth Connection. So I would like to hear from people with a Hard Wired 25+Mbps, and give us your Bandwidth. I think for good Streaming you need at least 50Mbps. Amazon uses Adaptive Streaming.

I ain’t hardwiring my entire freaking house. With WiFi I get a consistent 100+ and I find their service to be garbage. It’s the only consistently bad service I have, they compress the ever loving shit out some of their media and it looks terrible.

It appears you need to stop thinking and start reading. Vilya provided you with a informative link here. The highest data rate that any streamer uses is 16Mbps for UHD content. As I explained earlier the total payload can be higher and is the reason some providers recommend 25Mbps for UHD.

That’s . Adaptive data rates have been around since the 2002-2003 era. AFAIK, ALL streaming providers use adaptive data rates, I know Netflix has been using it for many years. I posted some info about Netflix test clips several post back, play those clips and you can see the adaptive data rates in action. Been doing this for many years.

I concur with this statement, especially after signing up for Hulu this week. Their quality is damn good.

I'm at 400mbps, hard wired through out my house. The only problem I've ever had with streaming is if their was an outage and the internet went out. That's really it. And it's been this way for the last 5 or 6 years. I'm getting ready to upgrade my service to almost 900mbps since Spectrum started to offer it in my area.

You could try a "repeater".
I have 3 of these throughout my house to enhance the wireless capability, especially the 5.0 band. Each unit has 5 1GB Ethernet ports so if strategically placed, you could hook up as many as 5 wired devices. Since the signal is amplified, you'll find the wired devices run better/faster than those that run on wireless.

I'm at 400mbps myself, Comcast just upgraded me at no extra cost. There is some outfit testing over-the-air broadband, i'm just beyond that limited area, but Comcast is upgrading everyone cause internet is basically all they have left...lots of cable cord cutters. If this wireless broadband idea flies, it could be a game changer as far as how people get their media in the future.
