I havent actually watched the theatrical releases since the extended cuts came out and the only way id buy BR theatical cuts is if Peter Jackson swore on the one ring that the extended cuts would never see the light of day.

If they're not the extended cuts, I'll just wait until they do release them because it's the only way I wanna see them. Besides they still look and sound pretty darn good on standard dvd.

NO EE editions then no sale! Hope someone starts a petition so we can all sign that we are tired of getting shafted by studios greed! Especially in light of the depression we are slipping into!

The simple solution here is mine.

When the theatricals are released, i'll simply Netflix them.

When the EEs are released, i'll pounce on them ASAFP!

I waited for EEs on DVD, I can wait again.

King Kong was also released twice - TE then EE. Both were included on the BD. Hopefully LotR will be the same. I'll still buy both editions anyway if not.

Recently finished watching the extended versions for the first time. This is the definite version. I can't see myself spending over $50 for the theatrical versions. I hope Peter Jackson has a say in the BD release.

Yea..the EE is the way to go. I rather have the studio release this trilogy right or don't release it at all. They should just import everything from the 4 discs dvd version including ALL the bonuses onto blu ray wtih full 1080p and lossless sound.

If they can do that...then it is worth it to double dip...imo

What is so much better about the extended versions? Is the extra footage crucial to the story/character development...or is it just for the fans? I have not seen any accept the theatrical version of the first film......(yes, i know)

There is a lot more character development (you get to know a lot more about the background of the characters; i.e. why Frodo lives with his uncle, Aragorn's mother etc etc). There's added/extended scenes that make the plot clearer, fill in the blanks and just make it a more fulfilling story. I highly recommend you check them out.

The Extended Editions provide more scenes and extra background information to the story which the filmmakers deemed expendable for the theatrical release (no mainstream crowd is going to sit through Return of the King for 4 hours). If you're an LotR fan, the EE's are the way to go. But some people prefer the theatricals as the pacing slows to a snail's crawl at times in the EE's.

Yeah.. I've had mine for years yet still have not seen all the extras..

I usually don't like 'behind-the-scenes' stuff, but the LotR bonus features are great. It's not until you see PJ's decision-making in action and the things they use to create Middle-Earth when you really appreciate what all went into it.

And don't forget Faramir and Borimir's backstory. This made Two Towers so much better. A lot of great character development that really adds to the story line, unlike most "extended" editions that simply make a movie longer instead of better.

It seems more BD's are being released with both versions on one disc.. just with seemless branching. Hopefully this is the case.

I am still pleased with myself for the deal I got on Fellowship when it first came out. Blockbuster had a deal where you paid $20 for a card that gave you 10 rentals (one a week for 10 weeks, skip one and it's gone) and you also got a copy of Fellowship (theatrical) when it came out. Then when the EE came out, I bought that for $30, it came with a free ticket to see Two Towers and I sold the theatrical version for $12.
