In the display settings, you need to have 720p and 1080p selected if your TV supports it.

Not all PS3 games support 1080p. In-fact, only a few actually do. I really don't have the numbers for you, but less than half of my collection support 1080p, and just 720p.

However, if you have any unsupported resolutions selected in the display settings of the PS3, then it should just default to the crappy 540 or whatever "bare-minimal" resolution.

If you have a game that you KNOW supports 1080p (if it mentions it on the back of the box) along with the proper supporting TV, then you deselect 720p in the display settings, and the game will upscale to 1080p. Why you have to do this manually is something that Sony should have resolved.

This all above is strictly speaking if you've messed with the display settings of the PS3.

Otherwise, common logic tells me this of your situation:

1) My PS3 plays great
2) I bought an HDMI cable for my PS3
3) My PS3 doesn't display anymore

= HDMI cable is the problem, or the display settings of the PS3.
well actually no. the HDMI cable i got came with the ps3 package i got. i have been using it since i got the ps3 =s i have also tried changing the resolution to 576p and 760p, it still has the same problem.
