As long as sound comes out of my speakers when I put this disc in, I’m happy.

Looks like I'll have to remux myself a 4K copy with the original Mono when I can. F#ck the remix. I'd be mad as hell but at this point I have to do this sorta thing so often that I'm sick of getting mad. In this day and age with such devotion to preserving old films... one would think the original audio would be priority #1 and remixes secondary. Sad as hell. At this point I'm just thankful a great video source and audio source is available on most films to combine into the ultimate release.

I must be in the minority here, but I have no issues with remixed surround tracks for oldies that were originally mono. I do think however the original audiotrack should be present at all times.

Well yeah. It stands to reason:

mar3o, you have the H:II corrected disc. The lossy was in the 5.1 on the first pressing.

Edit: There are screenshots in that disc’s dedicated thread of the audio menus on both discs. They’re behind the spoiler.

ORIGINAL

CORRECTED

So is this the corrected disc? When you say it should have lossless audio, do you mean the 5.1 should be lossless, or do your mean the 2.0 should be also? Because on mine the 5.1 is lossless but the 2.0 isn't.
Sorry I wasn't clear, you have the corrected disc. The original disc had no DTS-MA tracks, the corrected one has 5.1 in MA. Just wanted to give people buying the release a heads up that there was a corrected disc - FYI the corrected disc also restores Moustapha Akkad to the credits, who was missing from the original disc.

Also in this case, while the original 2.0 is lossy it is 768kbps, which is a very low compression rate (3:1) and thus probably sounds the same as lossless anyway.

It depends which one it is. The remixed track for this movie I can stomach though I don’t obsessively watch this movie. The remixed tracks for say Jaws, The Terminator or Grease are examples where the remixes just take me out the film but to each his own. I do agree there should always be an option for both.

I'm not a huge fan of the film nor own the UHD, but I thought the sound mix for Grease is a 5.1 based on the original 6 track mix for 70mm showings.

I don't think John Carpenter (himself) is this perturb about the audio on this 4K release of Halloween, and it's his movie. He even wrote the soundtrack! So If anybody is to upset about the audio, it should be John Carpenter.

I doubt he's even aware of the issue.

He knows! He already knows the details and A/V specifications on all of his movies, whenever they're being released on home video. You don't think he knows what's going on with his movies, prior to their home video releases? He wouldn't be a good businessman if he didn't...John Carpenter's movies is his investment, and a successful entrepreneur watches over and protects their investments.

So you're saying Carpenter specifically asked for a downmix instead of the real mono track. Yeah, that makes sense.

It's also possible that Carpenter was told that the UHD would include the original mono soundtrack, and then the folks at Lionsgate screwed up.

yeah it's completely logical that he asked for the fold down on this release. asked for the fold down on the 35th anni disc, but specified the genuine mono for the box set.

Gloria. you never ever disappoint.

He doesn't care whether or not the soundtrack is in mono or stereo because, he'll still get paid his royalties from the sales regardless.

John Carpenter have got more important things to do than to worry about a mono soundtrack for a movie that he made 40 years ago. That's water over the bridge! Like I've said before, if you want the 4K blu-ray, then don't buy it..It's just that simple because, complaining about it, is not going to change anything one bit, and it's not worth going off the deep end about it.. Either you buy it, or you don't!

Why do you assume he had any direct involvement with this release?

I don't think Carpenter really cares as long as it sounds fine. He's not Ridley Scott who cares about every f**king version of his movie. Watching Carpenter on Q&A's and interviews he's really happy that people dig his work but isn't someone that cares to watch his movies over and over again or have them be presented in any purest form. He's the kind of filmmaker that's like, "once the movie is in the can, I'm done". I respect that. No so much the rights holders decisions on using a fold down of the 7.1
