(*) - Indicates First Time Viewing
9/25/18 ![]() The Village: ![]() ![]() ![]() I remember when I first saw this movie, I didn't like it at all. But, going back and revisiting it, I came to realize that it's not all that bad. It's not your prototypical horror movie, but there are horror moments and they are presented very well. When the creatures invade the town, it's nerveracking. Now, I won't say anything about the ending, but it definitely comes out of nowhere. It might not be the most plausible, but it's still a good one. Oh, the horror so far this year: [Show spoiler]

I may not stick to it, but I am going to try to make my watch list more zombie centric as I have mostly neglected that genre in the last few years.
I haven’t read through the thread so it may have been mentioned already, but I would recommend Suburban Gothic in Hulu. Matthew Gray Gubler, Kat Dennings, Ray Wise, and a couple of cameos that I won’t spoil. Speaking of Ray Wise, Dead End is in Shudder currently. Last edited by drb124; 09-26-2018 at 01:25 AM. |

I've been procrastinating on posting here, but I've already watched a few movies as part of the season.
The Last House on the Left 1972 ![]() ![]() ![]() A very ambitious early film from Wes Craven with lots of interesting ideas, but many times it falls under the weight of the risks taken. The scene where the girl walks to the river to commit suicide while the killers walk behind her is the highlight, simultaneously beautiful and disturbing. Pumpkinhead ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I came into this expecting a fun 80's horror flick, and what I got was an incredibly impressive, emotional, and atmospheric tale of revenge gone wrong. Why don't more people talk about this one? Pumpkinhead himself looks amazing, and the settings like the Church and the graveyard are unforgettable. The Howling ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An 80's classic that hits the sweet spot between comedy and horror. Picked this one up as a blind buy at Best Buy and couldn't be happier. It's classic Joe Dante, and Dick Miller is always fun to see. Also that very last scene is perfect. Jason Goes to Hell ![]() ![]() ![]() I have no idea what anybody at New Line was thinking when they got the classic Friday the 13th franchise and came up with this. Any of the charm and vibe that defined the series is out the window, but thankfully it's a fun one to watch, particularly because there's so many weird choices made. Plus the cameos of the Necronomicon and Freddy Krueger are cool. Brain Damage ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I saw Basket Case this Summer during Joe Bob's The Last Drive-In, and had to check out more from Henenlotter. This isn't on the same level, I don't think the heart and atmosphere of pre-clean up NYC of Basket Case are here as much, but it's still a great time. If they ever made a That's Entertainment for horror that one scene outside the punk club would be essential. The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1939 ![]() ![]() ![]() I won't lie, I was a little disappointed with this one. Charles Laughton is excellent as Quasimodo, but he's too out of focus, while the characters who are just aren't that interesting. Really the presentation is rather stale, but there are some great moments. I particularly loved the scene of Esmeralda praying at Notre Dame, if there was more like that this would be a classic. Still, I'm glad I watched it, and am interested in seeing the silent version. |

9/25:
![]() Revenge (2018) -First time viewing- ![]() Has some nice cinematography, it was just the same thing regurgitated that's nothing special despite the overhype and hooplah. The Lift (1983) -New to Blu-Ray- ![]() ![]() ![]() A few campy moments and a muddled plot but it has a neat concept and is a quite effective and enjoyable little horror film. |

![]() ![]() 9/25 The House With A Clock In It's Walls ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A lot of its strength is in its visuals and the evergreen appeal of a story about learning magic and dealing with dark forces. Some of the comedy is appreciated but a little less would have been better. |

I'm so grateful to live an hour away from the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto where they do retrospectives all year round and use film prints whenever possible. Any film lovers that live in the area should not take what we have for granted. This Fall/Winter we have retrospectives on Joan Crawford, Steven Spielberg, Ingmar Bergman, an in-person Q&A with Liv Ullmann, and many other special screenings throughout. |

![]() ![]() #4 I was thrilled to see a blu ray release of this forgotten, B-grade slasher that I saw on TV when I was around 10 or 11 years old. The station that aired it apparently showed it uncut because I was shocked how gory it was!! Here is is over 40 years later and I'm seeing it again and evaluating the quality of this gothic thriller about heirs of a potential estate being picked off by an ax murderer. As an adult, this is a low budget, not particularly well-made thriller that does offer some thrills and violence after a fairly slow start. It's not really a good movie, but not a bad one either for fans of the genre. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() ![]() 17. THE MEG ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This one delivers as advertised a pretty good B movie / monster movie. Jason Statham is good and the rest of the cast ok. Creature effects are very well done and as usual I wish we could have had more of the monster. I will definitely check this out again when the Blu-ray is released. [Show spoiler]

first time watches in bold
[Show spoiler] from beyond - 5/5 the alamo drafthouse had a 35mm print. now, I have had the vhs (which by the time I got to it had been worn out), a DVDr bootleg of a screening on hdnet when it looked like it would never come out on dvd and I bought the scream factory blu as soon as it came out. this movie has never looked so good. I can not believe how great the effects still look on a big screen. the pretorious stuff is so great. and it's all real. it was really an embarrassment of riches when dealing with fx in the 80s, and this one doesn't get discussed nearly enough. there's so much slime in this movie. a lot of people talk about re-animator, and I love how crazy re-animator is, but I think this a better movie. combs steals almost every scene. crampton is so game to whatever weirdness they throw at her. ken foree as comic relief. and there's that whole sexual undertone to the whole movie. this should be mentioned more not just as one of the best horror flicks of that year, but one of the best horror movies of the 80s. if you're lucky enough to get a screening of s print by you, this one is a must! |
