First-time viewings marked with an *
[Show spoiler] -Hell Fest * (2018): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Standard slasher with an irresistible premise...what if one of those cheesy horror theme parks that pop up every October had an actual killer wandering around amongst the employees paid to pop out and scare the bejeezus out of the patrons? It's a fantastic setup, and the film's costuming and production design are top-drawer (it would take much freeze-framing at home on Blu-Ray to savor every dank corner). Plus, it's the ultimate screw-off to people who use the tired complaint about "cheap jump scares" when dismissing horror movies...this is nothing BUT jump scares, only the kind where you don't know if the next knife slashing out at you from the darkness will be made of rubber or steel, if he next hanging corpse will be a dummy or your best friend. That said, the film's characters are beyond-generic "types" (the virginal heroine, the "sass-ay!" black friend, the punk girl, etc.), and they're given so little set-up or background it's hard to care for them beyond a basic, Pavlovian response to see the protagonists survive (leading actress Amy Forsyth kind of looks like a lost Olsen sister, BTW). Still, as far as machine-tooled Jack-in-the-box scare machines go, it's a well-oiled one, with director Gregory Plotkin (who edited last year's Best Picture nominee Get Out) meting out the suspense with crack efficiency. And it's nice to see the Candyman himself, Tony Todd, make a cameo as the park's top-hatted M.C. |

3 Oct - When a Stranger Calls (2006)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the many remakes from the mid 2000s, and it falls about in the middle. It has some good tension here and there, and I like that it chooses the original Halloween route of leaning HARD on tension and less on kills. Nice to see a young Katie Cassidy in here too. But it's not earth shattering or anything, but Tommy Flanagan is perfectly cast as the "lurker". 14 Sep - Summer of 84* ![]() ![]() ![]() 16 Sep - Rob Zombie's Halloween ![]() ![]() 17 Sep - Sorority Row ![]() ![]() ![]() 20 Sep - The Nun* ![]() ![]() 23 Sep - Alice Sweet Alice* ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 24 Sep - Mandy* ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 26 Sep - Drag Me To Hell ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 27 Sep - Hell Fest ![]() ![]() ![]() 28 Sep - Terrifier ![]() ![]() ![]() 29 Sep - Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1 Oct - Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 2 Oct - Bay of Blood (Twitch of the Death Nerve) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 3 Oct - When a Stranger Calls (2006) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

All movies will be first time viewings!
![]() 10/3: Stephanie ![]() ![]() One of those Netflix movies floating around that you've probably passed a few times. First 20 minutes are pretty strong as young Stephanie is all alone in her house, for some unknown reason, and is terrorized by "something". This portion of the movie is pretty strong and awfully suspenseful. You'd think any movie where Frank Grillo and Anna Torv show up in would be awesome. Unfortunately they're stuck in a Blumhouse production. Goes extremely downhill from there. I have no idea why it's rated R. Easily could be PG13. 10/2: Bay of Blood ![]() ![]() ![]() 10/1: Summer of '84 ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The Endless (2017)
![]() ![]() ![]() I was so pleased to see that this is now on Netflix! That means it's free, right? This is sort of a follow-up to Resolution, that weird movie from a few years ago that you probably watched (on Netflix) about 2 guys in a cabin who find a bunch of video tapes. I loved that one and this one is just about as good, although quite different in some ways. I really like the set up here, as two brothers return to the old death cult that they escaped a few years before. They're going back to catch up with old friends from the cult (it's played for comedy and it works!). Soon, though, they are reminded of some of the reasons why they left the death cult in the first place as a bunch of super culty stuff happens. The cast here is GREAT and really shows what you can do with a limited budget and a simple but good idea (a fantastic, professional score helps!!!). There are also some very effective but murky special effects... it's almost like they shot the whole film at a low Resolution (natch) on purpose so that the low-budget sfx would blend in better. It's weird because some of the bigger effects work better than the "smaller" fx (like a bunch of photos fluttering down from the sky, or a simple fire effect... just drop some polaroids from a crane and set $#@& on fire, dude!) I didn't like the second half as much as the first, but this seems to be my curse with these kinds of movies (and the Lost TV show, for instance): I'm all in for the mysterious lead-up, but usually disappointed when the curtain is dropped (when you see "how the sausage is made"). I get a feeling that the "monster" here is disappointed as well--there's a moment near The End where it literally tosses a film projector in disgust. (And that's part of the joke, right? I mean the first movie is called Resolution and this one is called Endless...) But I'm sympathetic, because I don't know how to solve the equation either: how do you craft a satisfying payoff after revealing a freaky and juicy (NTM sexy) set of mysterious clues? Especially in 2017 when a zillion movies have already been paid off? Hell, if I could do that I'd be writing screenplays instead of bdforum posts. And do I encourage all viewers to do as I try to do when I watch any movie: enjoy the parts that you like and ignore the parts that you don't. You might find more "3 Star" movies that way, and a lot fewer bombs, even if you don't like The End. Last edited by blaken123; 10-04-2018 at 04:27 AM. |

![]() ![]() The Boneyard (1991) (First-time viewing) ![]() ![]() ![]() I feel like a movie with special effects and makeup effects this good should have been more entertaining to watch. On paper it sounds amazing but in practice it leaves a lot to be desired. Tonally the film is all over the place and it's just not very fun to watch. I definitely see myself watching this again in the future though so who knows? My opinion may change. -------------------------------------------- The Tenth Annual 31 Days of Terror [Show spoiler]

10/1 The Wolf Man 1941
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I always start things out with a few of the classic Universal monsters 10/2 The Mummy's Hand & The Mummy's Tomb ![]() ![]() Had a double feature since both were only about a hour each. Both were ok it's funny now as a grown up seeing these films and wondering how the Mummy killed anyone because he moves so slow ! 10/3 The Thing (1954) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I love this movie as a kid and still love it just as much now. This movie and 'Them" are two of my all time favorites |

![]() ![]() #9 The Prowler (1981)* ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great and gory practical effects by the legendary Tom Savini in this early 80’s slasher.
