Totally agree. I think if the Z9D (or whatever the current model is) had much lower input lag for games, I'd probably choose that. As it stands though, LG OLEDs have very low input lag and those deep blacks that I do love.

But the best LEDs and the best OLEDs can both be used to judge the quality of discs; it's just important to know the limitations of one's own display when discussing potential issues with a disc.

EDIT: For example, the BR2049 US release looks rather dim on 2017 LG OLEDs because of their tone mapping implementation.

I love that this has transitioned into a credible (if scattershot) hardware thread.

It’s better than the crayon garbage. At least it's civil.

Far more interesting than some of the absurd "revisionist" nonsense that was being spewed earlier. At least this is something that people can actually take seriously now.

OLEDs are great. They are fantastic televisions. It's when OLED buyers start talking "hands down best television" or "the best viewing experience, period" that I start to take issue.

I always put the qualifier "[...] for me" in those sentences.

"OLEDs are hands down the best television for me."

"OLED is the best viewing experience for me."

I really don't like blanket statements, so adding that qualifier allows me to make my strong preference known while clearly not making the assumption that it will automatically work for everyone.

Yeah it's amazing how a couple of words, or some other minor form of context, can be a small line of qualifier that creates a world of difference between what is simply a preference versus a bigoted viewpoint.

Reanimator put it best; see my signature.

But yeah, I think OLEDs are the best choice for me, but a solid LED is also an excellent choice.

I agree. Just like when I read OLED is not good if you watch a lot of sports. Blanket statements about any tv are just ridiculous. Nowadays, you will find that most tvs will produce a very enjoyable viewer experience.

Not sure if this was directed towards me or not, still I'll chime in anyway. I don't think I made the blanket statement. I just said that OLEDs aren't as favorable for Sports viewing if it is the TV's primary usage. The various score tickers themselves are reason alone. That also goes for being primarily used for watching news stations. Tickers and static logos are abundant. Often times those tickers and logos are also even bright, solid, and bold colors which make them worse and more susceptible to causing burn-in.

That being said, I love watching sporting events on my OLED, it looks quite fantastic.

it wasn't directed at you. More at Rtings and their silly BI tests that they are doing. Leaving a tv on all the time, with the same logo, in the same spot, and OLED light at 100. People should be more concerned about their power company delivering fluctuating voltage to their homes that can over the long run damage their electronics. But that's a different thread.

It's frustrating because many of these BI reports came from people who said they were using the TV normally.. Then you'd find out they would keep CNN on for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week as background noise while they did other things. Then all the sudden OLEDs are junk and no one should buy it.

I game, watch tons of sports as well as TV and movies and have no BI whatsoever after 3,000 hours.

OLEDs biggest issue for me personally is how they have to make big compromises with sustained high peak brightness to protect the screen. FALD QLEDs trounce them in that area. But OLEDs are still the only ones to do true blacks without panel fakery.

It's a choice. I don't think OLED quite delivers on the one technology to rule them all promise. QLED is probably the best everyday living room TV for most people money can buy, but the full FALD models are more expensive than LG OLED so it's not so easy a decision. If dark room viewing is the main end user concern, QLED will be weaker in that area. But when you are spending that much on a TV, they both give superb images and those willing to spend that sort of money are the sort who are probably well aware of the pros and cons in order to make their own educated decision to suit themselves and no one else.

8K is an area of madness I have no desire to get into. I looked into the energy rating of the two Samsung models on the market and the amount of juice they need to run compared to both QLED and OLED is insanity.

I wished that more people filled a signature with the hardware they are judging PQ on. Some do, and some you pick up generally along the way in the posts...

Ideally it would be neat if you had little badges on the left you could display by selecting in profile options what TV and player you have, and a hover over of the TV gave the key (rtings) specs. So people could ballpark what kind of experience reading ones post.

My OLED LG C8 (only equaled by the A9F) is the best TV I have ever seen. And I’ve owned a significant portion of high end TVs over the years, including most of the top of the line Sonys.

OLED owners should be proud. We own the best and most cutting edge home video technology in the world.

There are enough pissing contests here as it is. We have enough, "your TV's rubbish, what do you know!" posts too.

People will want an Optometry report after that.

HDR lets you watch part dark scenes with the same level detail as bright scenes. If Classic films have dark scenes then they should have HDR. Nuf said

No doubt. That mantle is going to go to MicroLED ("The WALL" tech) should that become mainstream/affordable within the next 5 years. If burn-in is being mitigated currently by nerfing peak nits, then we'll flat out not see a 1000+ peak OLED. And that would be the grail combined with some further advances on color banding.

I'm really hoping mLED does succeed because it seems really impressive and will only spec better each generation... It's hard to tell how market penetration will go with it. But it impressed and anyone who's seen it in action currently says it matches all the pluses of FALD LCD or OLED panels, and has none of the drawbacks of either. And if one of the "tiles" has a dead pixel or some radical variance, it should be replaced easily and also won't waste an entire set sorting out your display. Which is good for production loss @ the manufacturing level.

I'm going OLED this year because I can't wait for the yeeeaars before we can tell about that tech... but I will move on mLED if it delivers and scales down to flat panel sizing (65" or 75"); not just projection size applications for the price of a car.
