I sit really close but thanks for assuming.

Proably 6.5- 7 feet away. Maybe 8 at most with normal sofa sitting position

It breaks my heart, but steedeels first ever correct prediction has come.

Filmstruck is shutting down.

I know it was a niche, but it's devestating.

I think many criterion nerds are so staunchly disc only it hurt the service.

Someone i know on her with a couple thousand blus never signed up.

It was targeting the exact audience that is sticking to disc. In other words, those that value restorations, remasters and booklets, attractive packaging etc.. It was never going to take off imo. There is no room for such services in this streaming new world order.

Disc lovers unite.

2nd prediction by the way. I correctly predicted UV would all but collapse.

In my living room I'm around 12-15 feet back from an 80 inch tv, about the same distance (15 or so) from my 150 inch HT screen in the basement. In my bedroom I'm at least 10-12 feet back from a 50 inch and I'm just 4 foot away from my office TV as it's next to my desk - it's a 45 inch tv.

Streaming looks fine to me on all of them. Yes, will some 4K masters show some more detail? Sure, but I don't need to count every pore on Mark Wahlbergs face to enjoy a movie.

At that distance VHS would look fine to be honest Groot.

You've mentioned this before; is it a known thing that folks in the UK tend to sit closer to their TVs?

It has a lot to do with the recent merger and warner wanting to launch their own streaming service(even though their warner archive one sucked ass).

Some old old fogey probably made this decision

That is a shame. Filmstruck was one of the few streaming services that held any long term interest for me. I looked for it on more than one occasion in my TV's app store, but they never added it.

While I buy Criterion titles on disc regularly, there are many titles that I would have liked to have seen before making a purchase decision. Filmstruck would have made it possible to see acclaimed films from around the world had it ever been an option with my TV. I kept thinking it would eventually be added, but it never happened and now, sadly, it never will.

There are so many specialty streaming services, perhaps the market was over saturated? I suspect it has more to do with the possibility of movie studios each wanting to launch their own streaming service as opposed to licensing their content out to the likes of Netflix. They likely want all the streaming revenue for themselves.

I haven't sat close to a TV since the old days of being a kid playing a nintendo on a floor model tv. There's no need to sit that close unless you're in an apartment or small house. My office it just happens to be the best spot for my tv is to the right of my computer, so I can sit and watch the office...in the office while avoiding work like Jim in the office.

Yeah but you are a young woman. I’m over 40 now and my eyes have deteriorated slightly.

I love the U.K. version of The Office. One of my favourite comedy series of all time

It’s going to be a nightmare soon, not only exclusives to each streaming service but exclusives to hardware too. Apple will start that trend next year when they make content free for all Apple devices imo.

Just waiting for the first company to make a film exclusive to mobile. You know it’s coming.

I'm too old to wait.

I'm gonna be 34, I'm old by Hollywood standards.

Love both, huge Martin Freeman fan but I really like the US office too.

No doubt they do, but I don't know why they think it will be successful for them.
  1. Studios are not brands. Nobody cares that a movie is produced and/or distributed by Warner Brothers.
  2. Nobody is going to subscribe to a half-dozen streaming services. It's too expensive and too much hassle.
  3. Studio-specific portals have been tried before. Sony Pictures Store and Paramount Movies were not exactly successes.

I have mentioned this before but what’s to stop them releasing a film exclusively to mobile? Almost overnight it would force people to choose mobile or not see a film. I don’t think you guys realise how fragile some of these things could be. All these upcoming streaming mobile services will surely do this at some point to push their service.

Just idle speculation on my part. Maybe Filmstruck had too few subscribers? Maybe bad marketing? Lots of TVs did not even offer their app in their app stores. Maybe FilmstrucK simply failed to deliver the revenue the studios hoped for and they believe there are more profitable ways to distribute their content? Maybe some other streaming service outbid them? Maybe someone with more detailed knowledge will perform an autopsy and announce the actual cause of death?

I am sorry to see them go, but it will have little impact on me as I do not depend upon streaming to watch movies. This old fart still buys them on disc.

According to Wikipedia, Turner and Warner Bros. state that the decision to end Filmstruck was due to lack of subscribers.

"On October 26th, 2018, Warner Bros. Digital Networks and Turner announced that FilmStruck would be shutting down on November 29th due to a lack of subscribers. Criterion stated in a blog post that in wake of this, they were currently 'trying to find ways we can bring our library and original content back to the digital space as soon as possible.' "
