Now $17.97 on Amazon, so I had to pre-order.
Great film that stands apart from all previous series entries -- Serious with much of it filmed in Africa. Hope this sells well so that the next entry, Tarzan the Magnificent (also very good with African locations), will get a bit of a restoration and release to Blu-ray. I would really like to see the first two Weissmuller films (Tarzan the Ape Man & Tarzan and His Mate) get major restoration work. Those two were really big budget films of their day. |

Great film.
This and the follow up "...Magnificent" were hovering near the top of my WA wish list, but I discounted seeing them anytime soon considering that I recall the prints on the MOD DVDs looking a little rough. Like Seven Brides from earlier this year, I figured getting these would be was a pie in the sky wish. Happy to have been wrong on both counts. It's going to be hard to wait for the next, long off, 4/$44 deal to pick this up. I really need to though. My backlog of previous "must haves" is enough to bury me under. I often feel disgusted with myself for feeling the need to acquire something like this immediately, at higher cost, just to have it sit around unused- well past the point it becomes available at a good discount. |

I would agree for most films, but this is one that I don't want to wait (plus I'll be watching within 24 hours after I receive it). But, yes, for most product it is best for those of us with less "expendable(?) dollars" to wait for the best price. |

While the character sort of aged with Weissmuller over his 16-years as Tarzan (in 6 MGM movies plus 6 for RKO), in the first two Weissmuller is at his prime and all the dollars really show on the screen. I will also add that the first two are sort of historical studies on imperialism, race, and sex. In terms of daring stories (both good and bad), some so-called "Pre-Code" films were not excelled in cinema until the late 1960s. |

Just blind-ordered this. From what everybody is saying, this movie sounds like a winner. Love the cast, too.

I just read Cine Savant's review and it reminded me again of just how good this movie is and how long it's been since I've watched it. I probably will order this (and probably Dark Of The Sun as well) earlier than later. Either as soon as B&N kicks out a 20% off coupon or DD starts the 15% off. I'd still like to pay less than $15, but I'd hate waiting as long as it would take for it to be eligible in a future 4/$44 sale. |

Last year all the Nove releases were allowed on the Dec 4/44 sale. A lot of folks thought that was a one-off sale b/c they botched the normal Nov BF sale so badly so there's no way to know if they'll do that again or if teh March sale will be the first time these will be allowed. If you work the BN sales -- the 40% off Bluray XMAS week sale can be an excellent chance to pick them up for under $14ea max (and sub $10 ea depending on member status, coupons, and such things) |

My latest consignment of Blu-ray movies arrives tomorrow, according to Amazon. They include Tarzan's Greatest Adventure, Satanic Rites of Dracula and The Devil's Rain. I might have to call in sick on Wednesday.

Watched this for the first time in my life today. It was a violent, action adventure movie (it is pretty brutal in spots) populated by some very interesting characters. Somehow, this is one that has flew under the radar my entire life. Never knew it existed until recently. Don't ever remember seeing the likes of Anthony Quayle or Sean Connery as villains. The beautiful Sara Shane played a very interesting love interest for Gordon Scott's Tarzan, and Scilla Gabel wasn't your ordinary bad guy's girlfriend. But what was surprising to me the most was Niall MacGinnis as Kruger. He played a big part as one of the bad guys, and he did not disappoint. Completely devious.
Although I can't comment on what other home video versions looked like, I can say that this Blu-ray provides a good image and strong sound. Glad I bought it. |

All I can say after watching the bluray is
I've never seen the image so clean, detailed and textured, or the color so rich. Love the 1950s dye transfer color. Densities are as they should be. Love how the image fills all four corners of the monitor. The film is a little brighter than I thought. The audio has cleared up, too. Voices are more present and the score is more obnoxious and inappropriate than it used to be. Dramatically this is a definitive Tarzan film. Gordon Scott is a good actor, he works hard, and the director gives him every advantage. The film is smartly directed by John Guillermin, and after watching what he does for Tarzan, I wish he'd directed Goldfinger instead of that bozo Guy Hamilton. Let's hope Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1958) and Tarzan the Magnificent (1960) are next. |

However, 4/$44 right now. Guess we'll have to increase the backlog. |

I don't really see Guillermin improving Goldfinger much - the later Hamilton films like Diamonds are Forever and Golden Gun could have benefitted more from his involvement if he was given more of a free hand. Last edited by Aclea; 03-24-2019 at 06:54 AM. |
