Well, I'm hoping that Criterion is busy preparing the blu-ray editions that the films deserve...

There are a few Ichikawa films that I'd love see, in particular Manin Densha (The Crowded Train/Streetcar or The Full Up Train).

Enjo / Conflagration (1958): in HD, but sadly without subtitles
An Actor's Revenge is currently £8.29 at base.com

There's quite a few titles for that price:

https://www.base.com/fsearch.htm?q=b...2&pgresult-0=1

They also have the Alan Clarke 'Dissent and Disruption at the BBC' boxset (behemoth) for £64.99:

https://www.base.com/buy/product/dis...c-bfib1250.htm

I'm still hoping HMV will do a new 5 for £30 offer soon - it's been a while!

This is why I'm holding off those Base listings. There are a handful I want, so would save another tenner or so if I ordered them from HMV instead (or Fopp, as I'm probably going to the Covent Garden store on Monday and Bristol store next weekend).

got the woodfall set in the USA today and I haven't had time to sample them but the set itself looks lovely for the price base.com had it for shipped.
I almost think it has to be a mistake for them to sell it for so low since it was only around 35 quid shipped to the USA for 9 films

anyone in the usa who uses the top menu trick on a panny region A player to view these, will find them very odd. on the 1st discs, you have to use function to go to the non movie menu and keep pressing the numbers to play individual extras. the 2nd disc u have to press 1 on the non movie menu to even play the film. third disc plays fine, 4th disc is the same as the 1st where the movie plays fine but the number keys have to be pressed on the non movie menu to see the extras but I can verify the holiday film does play on the extras just fine
the 5th disc plays just fine with the top menu trick
tom jones theatrical and directors cut is just the same as the 1st disc in the set, and its the same with the girl with the green eyes as well as the knack

Just wanted to thank both of you for posting about this sale! I've been keeping an eye on prices for BFI titles since I got my all-region player a few months ago, and this is the best deal I've seen that I can take part in from over here in Canada. I picked up the Werner Herzog boxset, The Crying Game, Life is Sweet, and Eyes Without a Face, which basically clears out my wishlist (just about everything else I want would be a blind-buy). They all seem like great releases, and I know they're all great films, so I'm excited to finally add them to my collection

My BFI set of Pioneers of African-American Cinema arrived today, presenting me with an unexpected problem. I put my movies in order alphabetical order by director. This set has dozens of directors. Where to put it?

Oh, the agony of First World problems. Life can be really hard sometimes.

File under various or miscellaneous directors. That's where I would file it along with other compilations, anthology and portmanteau films if I used your system.

Looks like BFI are releasing Atoll K on its own in November: https://shop.bfi.org.uk/new-releases...t-edition.html

Not clear which cut it'll be yet (French, Italian, US, or either British cuts) but there will be a number of shorts on the disc including these:

Mother's Baby Boy (1914)
Something in Her Eye (1915)
Do You Love Your Wife? (1925)
Somewhere in Wrong (1925)

Also, A Taste of Honey is being issued separately in December, and Look Back in Anger and The Entertainer have been pulled forward slightly to November.

EDIT: okay, bit weird. Atoll K has disappeared and Girl with Green Eyes is up for pre-order instead.

M for Oscar Micheaux. He's not only the most represented filmmaker in the set by far, he is also - again by far - the most accomplished.

It's an absolutely amazing set, I hope the BFI put out a UK version of Kino's follow up (Pioneers: First Women)

It looks like HMV might have a BFI 5 for £30 starting in the next week or so.

I managed to pick up a few relatively recent releases (The two Bergman, the Children's Hour, An Actor's Revenge, Wages of Fear) for 6 quid each in Fopp this evening, so assume HMV won't be too far behind (apologies if this ends up being a Fopp only thing).

Had a feeling there might be something like this coming up so held off getting a few from Base for £8.29 each. Hope it's at HMV too though as I don't know when I'll next be near a Fopp!

I was looking at the base.com BFI shop today.

Great news - if at HMV as well. A Fopp only promotion would be a PITA

I'm only ever near to a Fopp once a year, always around now,but it didn't happen this year, this time last year(as with most years,so i assumed these offers are always instore at the time of year)they had a huge display of BFI titles,i actually picked up,from memory, Valentino,Women In Love,Symptoms,The Valley and Eyes Without A Face(out of a huge BFI selection) for £6 each and the Alain Robbe-Grillet boxset for £20(they also had the Herzog set for a similar price).

I think on occassion, some of the titles ended up in the 5 for 30(like Women In Love)over the following 12 months, but i don't recall ever seeing the majority of them that i saw,in that offer, and i watch it pretty closely.

Also got Her Private Hell and Primitive London for £4(they had a few others at £4 also),they also had individual displays of pretty much every Odeon,Arrow and 88 Blu's that were out at the time for £6 each, although i think the Arrow selections have become more restricted over recent years.

It seems to be a sweet spot around now for the most genre labels being at great prices in there around now,all at the same time,i really miss not going this year.

I'm almost tempted to make a special trip just to go to Fopp having read these comments, now that i know there appears to be a good selection again this year.

I was hesitating to import Maurice blu-ray because of its price.. Cohen releases tend to be a bit expensive. It was only a matter of time until someone picks it up in UK.. And here it is! Very glad about that. This and Orphee by Cocteau are in my top priority wishlist.
