I hereby challenge this. Rent Peter Hyams' A Sound of Thunder and get back to me.

The Star Wars prequels. I don't recognize one important scene that actually takes place on location (fight with Darth Maul, Ben vs. Anakin, Yoda vs. Dooku).. and it really hurts the films. It's obvious when the actors are just standing in front of a green screen as opposed to the actors from the originals who actually stood in sets which were built for the scene. Also.. Yoda. A CG Yoda ruined the character. 1. He looks like he came from a Pixar movie. 2. It's hard to take him seriously. I'd rather have the puppet return from the originals then have him be all CG and flipping through the air like a Mighty Mouse wannabe.
The "Scorpion King" from The Mummy Returns. Absolutely horrid.. ruined the movie for me. One of the only things Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has on its predecessor. I have to agree with whoever said I Am Legend, although I did enjoy the film. The "zombie people" looked so bad. It's like they came from the movie Silent Hill. |

I still remember the army of spawns cheering in the final battle, they animated a couple spawns and then multiplied them!!!! It was so funny! |

I was about to say that. From what I heard the studio that was originally financing the film went bankrupt and another studio bought the rites and released as is. i am not sure how true that is.

I read on Wiki that Franchise Pictures went bankrupt and Warner stepped in to pick up the film. They gave a very limited amount of money to finish the effects. Add on top of that that the movie was filmed sometime in 2001 or 2002 and originally planned for a 2002 release. It was delayed 3 years. I thought it was fun and the storyline was intriguing, but the effects are laughable in 99.9% of the film.

Pretty much anything that overuses CGI/ tries to blend it in with Live action. Kind of like in TPM when you've got two Jedi's and a freakin' Cartoon walking around together.
I agree with who said that in the old days we marveled at the FX because we had to speculate how they could have done them. Now a days the answer is always CGI. The only exceptions I can think of are Christopher Nolans movies. I mean, the sequence in the Prologue was amazing! (TDKR), also imagine if the hallway sequence in Inception was all green screen? Both of the scenes I listed could have easily been done (and would have been by most filmmakers today) with 99 percent CGI but instead were done with maybe 5 percent CGI and mainly practical FX and stunt work. What a difference. CGI should be a touch up tool, nothing more. Last edited by beanham22; 01-13-2012 at 02:13 AM. |
