Also, welcome Robert Zemeckis to the Criterion Collection! All we need is the Back to the Future trilogy Criterion edition next. J/K.

Wow cool news about Japon. I had just posted earlier last week about how I thought Silent Light would be an excellent Criterion Edition. Maybe that can come in the future!

Holy Crap! I think Criterion listened to me. Back in March I made a post saying I discovered these twin artists named Anna and Elena Balbusso, and I was so enamored by their artwork and skill that I hoped that Criterion would use them one day. I contacted them at that time to let them know about their work too..

Their work can be seen at their official site:

or here:

A few samples I liked:

And Now we have this incredible artwork for The Magic Flute by them!

Those are very nice. I especially like the top left.

That Bergman art is nice too.

Particularly excited about I Wanna Hold Your Hand and its special features and more Harold Lloyd, but a lot to like this month.

This is hilarious. I actually went into the Critters thread thinking it was the Criterion thread as it was the most recent post in the NA Blu ray section the other day.

Japon is a nice little surprise. Good little film.

Detour is my favorite Criterion announcement in recent memory. It's one of my top 10 films noir, and it's also one of the greatest B movies ever made.

I'm practically drooling at the mouth in anticipation of this.

Wanda sounds intriguing as well. 1970s bleakness is great bleakness.

The Magic Flute sounds good...oh...wait...I already own the box set. (Insert head-banging emoji here.)

I think it has a strong argument for being THE definitive film noir.

As I said in its thread, I think this vies with Ace in the Hole for Criterion's most important noir release.

Why do you choose Ace in the Hole and not say, The Asphalt Jungle, Sweet Smell of Success, or Kiss Me Deadly?

Actually, I would have said that The Third Man or The Night of the Hunter would have been its stiffest competition.

But as to your question, Ace in the Hole had never received any home video release, relegated to shoddy cable broadcasts despite a growing appreciation over the decades as one of Wilder's greatest accomplishments. It's also among the most prescient films ever made and is probably more relevant in our current media-dominated climate than it was in '51.

Criterion salvaged it from ignominy and obscurity and made it more widely-available, helping to validate its stature as an indispensable account of journalism and a towering American classic.

Gotcha.

What would you say is your favorite Criterion noir release? For me it's probably a tie between In a Lonely Place and Kiss Me Deadly.

Detour will be a blind buy for me, but I've heard so mamy great things that I know it's a safe first day buy.
