I wasn't referring to those two specifically and I even said that Far From Heaven may be one of his more accessible. I was referring to a good portion of his film work. A film shot with Barbie dolls would be considered avant-garde. Plus he is a queer filmmaker that got his start in the '90s. I think that alone there would qualify him for avant-garde. There were very few queer filmmakers back then making films outside of the usual Hollywood channels. And when they did make films, those said films did not always get a national platform like many movies today. Especially queer ones.

By that nature, they are seen as avant-garde. Queer filmmaking was relatively new at that point. And not really great either. There were some decent stuff being made but, by and large, the genre wasn't exactly the greatest. I don't know that it's gotten a whole lot better either. With DVD introduced a lot of these movies go to home video. And that is not always for the best. Though there are some standouts. Like Boy Erased. However, I'm not sure if that would qualify as pure Queer cinema exactly. I'm not quite sure how Joel was able to get that movie made without any issues. People are already making a fuss about Guy Ritchie helming Aladdin instead of an Asian director. And the movie isn't even out yet.

I have not seen that movie, but I know that Douglas Sirk was a main inspiration for Todd's movie. I'm not sure what that has to do with anything. As I've said Far From Heaven may be one of his more accessible movies.

I may not agree with Foggy, as I'm sticking with Tree of Life for my choice. But I think it's absurd to write off Carol. ESPECIALLY without having seen it! If it isn't in the conversation, then there really is no conversation to be had.
All of that may well be true, but I do not go to the cinema or watch movies at home SIMPLY for cinematography. Or writing, terrific performances, and what not. The movie, first and foremost, has to be something that piques my interest for me to want to see it. The movie could have the greatest cinematography of all time, but if the movie doesn't pique my interest than it's a waste of my time. I was not piqued to see Carol nor have any interest still to see it. It may be all that you say, but I don't a drop of interest in this movie. I don't think the story or subject sounds entirely intriguing enough for me and I don't think the director is all that. I am not meaning to offend anyone by what I say. This in an unpopular movie opinion thread and I have voiced one.

Randy Quaid is the better actor than Dennis Quaid.

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not but Micheal Corleone is one of the most boring characters in Cinema. I don't find him as interesting as his dad.

Hmm, at the very least, I'd say his best since Jackie Brown. It's definitely a return to form for him, I don't see how anyone could argue that.

Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2 & Die Hard 2 are all better than Die Hard.

Jaws: The Revenge is easily the best Jaws sequel.

Venom will eventually come to be regarded as a body horror cult classic. It has its tongue firmly lodged in its cheek throughout its duration, and I absolutely loved it.

And it's highly re-watchable as well. The cast is freakin' excellent in their roles.

I kinda wanna see Venom, but what's putting me off is my aversion to Tom Hardy.

I like Hardy but I couldn't sit through that 1998 cgi.

The Ring, Let Me In, and Evil Dead are better than their original counterparts and are also some of the best horror films of all time.

Casino is the best movie out of all movies.

The Godfather is the second best movie out of all movies.

Goodfellas is the third best movie out of all movies.

What does let me in do better than let the right one in or evil dead do better than the original? Can't think of anything really.

I find Let Me In to be more dark, viscous, atmospheric, engaging, and emotional.

Evil Dead is more serious, evil, dark, and brutal.

Fair Enough.

Maybe not a UO but 2018 was the worst year for films of my entire adult life. I could just be losing interest in the medium but I'm not interested in new superhero films, reboots, Mcqueen's widows disappointed me greatly and even You Were Never Really Here while a fantastic watch left me just a little underwhelmed. Last year's beguiled and good time were so good I look back on 2017 somewhat fondly but 2018 I could skip everything other than Mandy and not have missed much.
