I realized that, in my past reviews, I’ve been guilty of unintentionally chauvinistic statements like, ”Humphrey Bogart delivers his most multilayered and emotional performance to date, while Gloria Grahame is beautiful as always.”, that reduce actresses to mere window dressing without acknowledging their actual dramatic abilities. I didn’t notice that I was doing that until recently, but addressing it has made me a better movie fan.

That's mostly the sort of thing that I was talking about a few posts back.

It's not really about giving in to present-day political correctness protocols, but more about focusing on the sort of stuff that helps me to appreciate cinema more in general.

There are some movies, Lifeforce, for example, that I've had more fun reviewing as such, because I try to acknowledge things that everybody loves about them without fixating on certain stuff outside of a reasonable context.

Sometimes the woman's role in the film is purely just for eye candy for better or worse. That's not the viewer / reviewer's fault.

I get that. The Penthouse Pets in Piranha II: The Spawning were not chosen for the film to convey multilayered character arcs.

Still, it's possible to write about such films with a knowing wink without coming across like a drunk middle-aged guy at a strip club.

Was going to add that I might be jumping on that boycott for Scream real soon. As others stated they need to really step up their game for those prices. I'm thinking about waiting for decent sales from Screams site or any retailer out there. Even if it means not getting a poster or even a slip. In fact, if I do end up with slipless versions then I may just sell off all of my slips, maybe. We'll see how bad I need the cash first. I have all of them for their collectors editions, could make decent money.

I am supporting other labels much more for now on, primarily VS, Scorpion and then Arrow. Also support MVD, massacre Video, and a few other small ones. Scream will lose some business. Since I buy at least 5 or more of their titles a month, plus I used to jump on their website exclusives.

I'd like to see the SF shills defend a $30 Sleepwalkers vs. a $12 version. Have we entered an era where turds are polished and it's OK to overprice them because of a slipcover and a couple of talking heads? Apparently so.

The $12 disc has no extras. The Scream Factory disc features lengthy present-day interviews with the director and the main cast, in addition to a fun-spirited director/cast commentary track. Even with things being equal with regard to the audio/video quality, the Scream disc is a perfect set for fans of the film.

Except for the new artwork, which is just amusing more than anything else. Of course, it does capture the “Throw in everything but the kitchen sink.” vibe of the main feature.

Agreed. I was initially skeptical, too, but if there's one director you'd want working on special features for one of their own films, it's Mick Garris.

That’s great and all, but for me the transfer is the most important part of a new release. If you’re gonna charge $30 at least give the film a 2K scan, I’d rather they’d spent the money on that as I really don’t care or have the time to watch extras about how the film was made etc.

I didn't love Shout's pricing before and still don't like it, but I'm in the "what's my other option?" group. If they release something I really want that I can't get elsewhere, I'll buy it. If it's a blind buy or something I don't want that badly I usually pass but if they were priced cheaper or had a real good sale then I'd probably jump on it. Definitely don't double dip because I don't have time for special features and could care less about new cover art (although sometimes it's cool to look at, in reality it sits on a shelf and I never look at it).

Right now my amazon.ca pre-orders of Valentine and Poison Ivy are sitting at way higher prices than I've ever paid for their releases and if they don't adjust by release date I might have to cancel. Poison Ivy should be around what I paid for the Critters box set, not more. Valentine should be what I paid for Candyman, not more. Both are about $10 more. We'll see what happens.

I really want their release of Sleepwalkers, but there's no way that I'm paying the current price for it.

The Shout pricing thing is beginning to get old so I won't bring it up again but I do want to say one more thing before moving on. They have to be losing a LOT of business from the impulse buy/double dip segment of the market, of which I am a part of, so why are they still doing it? This strategy can't possibly be working for them. I don't hate them for it but it's going to be easier to start drawing parallels to the Rubenstein/Dawn of the Dead situation where you have one person (in this case, a company) holding strong to a very unpopular policy. Just sayin'.
