The 3D version is PG. I guess because they had the monkeys shoot first in that one or something...

It's difficult to say. The original negatives were scanned in 8K for the 2009 restoration (and the 2013 3D verion is sourced from that with additional tinkering), but I haven't been able to find any answer as to whether the restoration was mastered in 2K or 4K.

Warner always pulls out all the stops with Oz. If the current master is 2K, I definitely see them going back to the 8K scan and doing the digital cleanup and color correction all over again from scratch just because it's Oz. My theory, though? I think the master is already 4K. Why? Because Warner usually announces these new Oz restorations well in advance, and there hasn't been a peep from them. So either the UHD will be the current (4K?) master with HDR applied, or we're not getting a UHD release at all (which would be shocking to me as Warner re-releases Oz for every anniversary).

As for the Fathom Event screening, I'm pumped for it. The Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorites, and this will be my 5th time seeing it on the big screen (the other four times were the 70th anniversary, IMAX 3D, the 75th anniversary, and live in concert this past summer). I've got a group of TCM Backlot members I see these reissues with every month, so that'll make this particular screening special.

No changes to content, just stricter ratings standards which the MPAA has developed. Not sure why WB even resubmitted the 3D version, other films which got a 3D re-release didn't resubmit to the MPAA and just used the original rating.

= PG-13 for decapitations, bloody murder, and a f***

= G for traumatic car crash, beeped swear, and fart jokes

= PG for 3D monkeys, a gun, and Margaret Hamilton???

Margaret Hamilton didn't even let her son see the movie until he was older. She said it was too much for her in some spots. I think it's a little ironic that one of the best villains in movie history was played by one of the nicest ladies on the planet. She loved kids. She started out as a kindergarten and Sunday school teacher and then had a place in the Beverly Hills Board of Education. I just wish we could see her banned Sesame Street episode.

Judy Garland had issues acting afraid of her. She was just too friendly. When Margaret had to go to the hospital after receiving her burns, Judy visited her regularly over six weeks. Margaret was the complete opposite of Ethel Gumm.

It's sad that practically none of Richard Thorpe's Oz scenes have survived outside of a few shots and on set photos. It'd make a great special feature one day.

I hope someone has that Sesame Street episode somewhere. It's a shame that even 30 years later, kids were still afraid of her.

Agreed! It's been 43 years since it aired. Kids today would probably get a laugh out of it. The parents could show the kids her appearance on Mr. Rogers if they get scared. She says there's no nothing to be afraid of and that it was just dress up and make believe. I'm sure a majority of kids have seen way worse these days.

As an Oz-enthusiast, what a shame all that deleted footage is lost. I keep crossing my fingers that one day the Thorpe footage would surface.

Also, speaking on Margaret Hamilton, she had alot of her scenes trimmed after preview audiences complained back in 1939. She was such an amazing woman - her backstage nightmare story of getting burned is insane.

While I wouldn't change the outcome of the 1940 Academy Awards, what a shame she didn't get a Supporting Actress nomination.

I wonder if her not being a contract player had something to do with that. She bounced around a lot, but I'm not sure how the Academy considered things back then or if they even had Oscar campaigns like what we have now.

There are quite a few of her lines edited making it sound like she was cut off mid sentence. Mostly in Munchkinland and the chase around her castle. "Thought you'd be pretty foxy, didn't you?! WELL!", then jump cut.

I know they filmed the Tin Man being turned into a beehive and her giving Nikko the golden cap, but I really cool find any still or footage of the latter.

Some of her lines were also carried over from when Gale Sondergaard had the role, before dropping out. The most notable one is "Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?" We don't think anything of her saying 'beautiful wickedness,' but with Gale Sondergaard, who WAS beautiful, in the role, the line would have taken on a completely different meaning.

I remember reading, years ago for the last theatrical release something about the film being re-mixed for Atmos...
Has anyone else heard more?

I don't remember hearing about that. It's not listed on Dolby's site, but it'd be interesting for such a limited soundtrack. I guess they could use the overheads for the tornado, the flying monkeys, and the 'Surrender Dorothy' sequence. I'm sure it was difficult to make the 5.1 mix from the original mono and its stems, so Atmos to me on Oz, may be a little overkill. Oz The Great and Powerful, on the other hand, was mixed in Atmos in 2013.

So will there be a new blu release? I read this on a 80th anniversary facebook page:

Quote:
Now that AT&T owns the Warner Library including The Wizard of Oz, a re-release for The Wizard of Oz 80th Anniversary doesn't look promising, but you never know until last minute. I was hoping for a 4k release since it's already scanned and ready to go. Maybe they will add some of the newly discovered footage and outtakes that were not included on any previous releases.

It'll probably end up the same as Disney when they bought Lucasfilm, Marvel, and Fox. At&t is big on streaming since it's an ISP/telecommunications company, but they may allow their subsidiaries to do as they see fit, including physical home media. I wouldn't worry about it.
