As I keep saying, not having shite HDR kinda helps with the whole 'HDR10' thing.

You're missing the point I'm making. Infinity war along with 2049 have some of the best base layer HDR10 applied to it because the Optimizer fixes very little of the picture. So when you mess with the slider on those movies you'll notice very little change even for what the player can do. Has nothing to do with the tv have shit HDR. Now the LG movies the slider optimizes A LOT

Yes, on a display that's not mapping them correctly. The issue with less than stellar HDR transfers is NOT that poorer HDR displays can't show them in their entirety in terms of their specs on paper - they can, even your TV with its reported 400-nit ish peaks - it's because the display's mapping is thinking that the content is far more expansive than it actually is, so can end up badly clipping or compressing the range as a result.

What LG movies would you recommend I look at?

Expendables all of them. All of the newer ones that dropped like Halloween, both Punishers. Well like I said you'll see those through DV but if you turn it off (the DV) youll see the 10 and be able to optimize it, what I mean by how the optimizer helps the HDR10 out on the disc. The first 2 Predators also is a good reference.

Expendables 3 is fcuked anyway because of the levels problem. I had zero problems with the Punishers or Halloween, I switched to HDR10 when testing out the latter and saw practically zero differences between it and the DV rendering, aside from the DV black levels issue which I've fixed anyway. I also think that the Predators look absolutely fantastic as well

With all due respect, I'm not so sure that we're in the realms of 'getting it to how it SHOULD look like in HDR' with your usage of the Optimiser, but rather 'getting it to how YOU think it should look like in HDR', which are two different things. I'm not after adjusting something to give it more 'pop'.

Again with adjustments like the gamma on the 9000 that I also can do, fix in my mind a lot of black crush i was seeing on Hulk. What you see is ultimately going to be different because hdr is dependant on TV. all I ever claimed was that the 820 gives you the most out of your TVs HDR experience and extend the mileage of it. You can break the argument down into dick measuring contest about TV capabilities but at the end of the day I believe the 820 and the 9000 gives you the best HDR experience for UHD discs regardless of the TV

If you want to start altering things from how they should actually be, over and above correcting any genuinely faulty software and/or corrective moves the Optimiser makes for fitting the content into one's display, then I can see the appeal. But that's not the direction I'm coming at this from, I'm not after regrading HDR to my personal taste so I doubt I will be as enamoured with it as yourself. Do I like how I can crank up the Panny's sharpness settings on Oblivion's super-softened UHD? Sure I do. But that's literally a (checks UHD collection) 1-in-370 occurrence.

Well I cant change your perception but not everyone has OLED capabilities or Z9D capabilities. What I mean by that is even if you are not getting the PRIMARY benefit of the player(helping make the HDR capabilities better displayed to the TV for TV's with less than stellar HDR) does in no way devalue the capabilities of the player, you're just blind to them. Because the Oppo can't do what this player can do for the playback of UHD HDR content on my TV. Nor could the Sony or the Pioneer. That's a fact. Along with all the other HDR customization's and bells and whistles.

Crimson, I don't recall saying that you or anyone else isn't getting what you/they want outta this player, but clearly we're coming at it from different directions owing to different TVs, different expectations and whatnot. 'Twas ever thus!

I understand I am just explaining the primary reason i purchased the player. And i just think those benefits are very genuine merits rarely seen in this hobby nowadays

How do I output audio simultaneously from both the HDMI VIDEO OUT and OPTICAL/AUDIO OUT terminals?

I’ve been following this thread and player for a while. Jumped in Saturday and grabbed one from Best Buy on an impulse buy.

I’m coming from the launch Samsung 4k Player.

My set is 1400 nits.

Watched Venom and Infinity War Saturday, Birdbox on Netflix 4k Sunday.

Initial impressions:

-I really like adjusting the brightness with the HDR button. Delvng further into that button’s menus though, it quite literally just adjusts the brightness a few numbers on the bar. Still really like that though.

-I noticed no difference with the HDR optimizer.

-In terms of general HDR and overall look, I’m still questioning the improvement or upgrade from my launch player.

-I was REALLY impressed that I could get Dolby Atmos audio out of Netflix. I also thought Birdbox looked outstanding and was probably the best I’ve seen out of Netflix 4k. I’ve prevoously only watched Netflix on my TVs app.

I have a lot more playing to do. Was TOTALLY happy with what I saw, but not in a way that makes my launch player look bad. Have to think this over a bit after more movies...

Really? I see and hear a BIG difference and how can you not notice a difference with the HDR optimizer? Clearly you can see a brightness difference at the very least yes?

I also came from the original Samsung 4k player with a brief stint of the LG UBK-90.... the picture and sound are the best I've seen so far on a 4k player....

Interesting - and I see we’ve got the same set, just yours is the 65”.

The optimizer did nothing with my first 3 movie tries. Changing to “light environment” for example with the HDR button obviously did, but not turning on the optimizer. Is that what you’re referring to?

On the Samsung launch player, I always had dynamic contrast on and then some level of that in my tv settings (I love bright HDR pop). Did you ever use either of those before this player?

I have a lot more experimenting to do...we’ll see.

I never mess with mine, just set it to OLED when I got it and turned HDR Optimizer on, and never looked back.

Anyone remember the Target commercial with the woman that had her face pressed against the Target store front glass and constantly chanting "open, open, open"? Well, I keep checking my email for one from Value Electronics with "ship, ship, ship" thoughts in my head!

Any response Robert on the 820 Alexa integration? It was advertised as coming to this player back last spring and was a primary selling feature for me (after the HDR optimizer.) The account setup is there for the player in the setup menu, but no skill is available on the Alexa app to enable.

Default Panny 820 with SamsungKS8000 NorthAmerican model

hi everyone. I sold my beloved Panny 900 to get the 820 and I feel that the 820 and I'm happy with my decision. Since I have a Samsung KS8000, I set the player to Mid to high Luminance to match the TV and I turn on the HDR Optimizer- I also increased the black curve a couple of clicks and the white curve too-if needed such as in Blade Runner 2049 and that's it....
What does adjustig Sharpness values do?
Is Mid to High Luminance the correct setting for my TV? or should it be super high?
thanks
