I thought this was a good 4K movie with great sound and picture and acting and storyline.
...One of the best in 2018. Beats The Predator and Venom by Mach 20 (20 times the speed of sound). Last edited by LordoftheRings; 01-05-2019 at 11:18 PM. |

I was really disappointed in this. The only cinema release from last year that I saw theatrically but did not go on to buy the physical release.

I agree that some of the movie's laziest flaws are what have been stated in the last few posts.
Especially the idea that these monsters use sound to "see", and no one thought to test different frequencies against them? Ever? Please. Also, I can't stop getting frustrated at how they live in a house that has virtually no sound proofing. Anyone with half a brain would at the very least use foam padding, insulation, or even mattresses and other crap on the walls and ceilings in rooms where they spend the majority of their time. Instead, they hang around in an acoustically natural house. Such a lapse in logic is a plot contrivance to allow moments of "horror/tension". I just kept thinking "Well, if you are too stupid to sound proof your damn house, it's YOUR fault that you are gonna die." |

Have people not accepted after all this time that the nature of horror movies basically necessitates that the characters be idiots? It's genre, it comes with the territory; either go for the ride or see something else.

It's true. Without stupid people making stupid decisions we would have no horror movies.

I would think that people would have tested various frequencies against the monsters, it's just that if you make one wrong sound, then you are likely dead. So, you can't really learn from your mistakes in that way and improve your weapon against them. Not to mention, communication has broken down across society, so if someone else discovered this even 10 miles away it would be hard to know about it.

It's a given that 99% of horror movies will consist of characters making stupid-ass decisions.
What I love is when a horror movie manages to show enough effort to provide the characters with good reasoning behind bad decisions. The more lazy the writing, the more stupid the characters, typically. |

Finally got to see this movie over the weekend. I REALLY liked it. I thought performances were strong from everyone. I am willing to put aside some issues with the movie, because overall I really enjoyed it.

Revisiting this flick, I found the 4K to be far more colorful than I had initially remembered the film to look. Indeed, despite some reviewers generally describing the hdr upgrades as subtle, I disagree inasmuch as I was blown away this time around by the substantially boosted color grading I'm really noticing on the hdr presentation. When I compared it back to the standard blu ray, the 1080p disc now looks slightly washed out, dull, flat and video-like. The 4k disc's excellent lighting, solid contrast and vibrant color scheme is far more effective at demonstrating the intended time of year, time of day, etc in each scene, as the movie unfolds. It's quite striking, watching the family first walk into the woods and seeing the firey orange autumn leaves of the turning maples literally bursting out of the mid-to-early Fall canopy. The remainder of the 4k presentation continues to demonstate far stronger and more vibrant, luxurious color upgrades than I had noticed the first time around, soundly trouncing the bland-ish blu ray disc. Even the low-light interior environments on the 4k disc boast strong and deeply colored visuals from things such as illuminated computer/equipment screens, lanterns, glass objects, candles, etc etc, as well as a remarkable boost in the family's clothing. If you like the film (and can contain your almost irrepressible urges to yell at the screen and slap the characters silly for their sheer and repeated acts of utter stupidity), then you need to get the 4k disc, and once you do so, I'd bet you will likely never watch the blu ray again.

I really liked it until the end. It's one of those horror movies where
[Show spoiler] I get that something like that is necessary in most scary movies, but I thought it was handled badly here. |
