The Best Way To Describe My Reaction To This Is That I Am Highly Cautiously Optimistic

Quote:
ead or Alive 6 Director and Producer Yohei Shimbori recently went to Taiwan for an interview, where he talked about the extent of clothing damage, whether Misaki from Venus Vacation might join the game later on, and the inspiration for new characters NiCO and Diego.

Check out the highlights below:

Shimbori apologized once again for the delay, saying that while he can’t reveal specifics, the gist is that they needed to improve balance and expressivity.

Regarding clothing damage, Shimbori states that is has been adjusted to not go overboard, for their female audience. He feels this aspect might be better left to the Xtreme series instead.

Regarding how the different versions on the game will differ in terms of presentation, Shimbori stated that there will be official announcements soon, including differences in specs and content.

When asked if there will be any crossover with Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet, Shimbori answered that there are currently no plans, but did not rule out anything in the future. He further joked that Misaki, the new character being added to Xtreme 3: Scarlet, is not a fighter, and might even get knocked out with one punch. That said, he does have some ideas.

Because the Dead or Alive series is popular in the US, it directly inspired the making of new character Diego. Shimbori did research beforehand and incorporated opinions from various age groups to create Diego, who’s themed after a street brawler. While he’s powerful, he’s also a simple character to pick up.

As for NiCO, she was made for the Japanese and Asian audience. Because her concept was influenced by anime and light novels, she feels a bit more “anime” than characters before. Originally, they got together internal staff who liked anime to come up with the concept, and went with a design which exuberated coolness. Compared to Marie Rose and Honoka, who were also designed with anime and manga inspirations, Marie Rose is small and cute, Honoka is all about her childish face and boobs, and NiCO’s charm lies in her cool but “chuuni” atmosphere.

The reason why Sumire Uesaka was chosen as NiCO’s voice actress is because in the original concepts, NiCO was from Russia, and so they chose a voice actress who was familiar with the language. However, halfway through they changed NiCO to being from Finland, so sadly her language skills didn’t end up being put to use.

Finally, who is the protagonist of Dead or Alive 6? Shimbori feels every character is a main character, and it all depends on who the player chooses. That said, some characters have a larger role in the story, such as Honoka and her mysterious power, which is being targeted by NiCO. If he had to pick one, as the core of the series revolves around the Mugen Tenshin clan, he would choose Kasumi.

Dead or Alive 6 will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 1, 2019. We recently reported on the online beta test that is still ongoing here.

What could Dead or Alive the series do to really change up the formula so it doesn't seem like the same game each time but with slight improvements and new characters/costumes? I guess not much if it remains a pure fighting game. Maybe a new mode, that somehow switches up the combat to a different style, so it's not so much combo streaks of one player beating the hell out of the enemy, and then the enemy getting up and that repeating for the player or vice versa. A mode with more defensive blocking moves maybe. Not sure how they could do that with the existing set up.

I'd like a mode where you could have the character freely be controllable to go to walk around a store, or some of these locations, to explore a larger map, buy the extra equipment, gear, outfits and maybe even swords and shields to fight with. Weapon combat, like Samurai Shodown would draw me back into the series. Just something new that takes advantage of the hardware beyond just small improvements.

I'd be interested in that, too. An action-adventure game featuring some or all of the characters. I recall they were going to make one years ago starring Kasumi and Ayane, but then it was cancelled.

On another note, is anyone else creeped out by the existence of Marie Rose? She seems like a character tailored specifically to pedophiles. She's unusually flat-chested (which is weird in this context, as DOA games are like the video game equivalent of Russ Meyer films) and her behavior is extremely immature, like the way she cries when she loses. It's not just a light sobbing; she full on wails the way a little kid does. They list her age as 18 for "legal reasons", but everything about her is more like an 8 year-old, which makes it even weirder that fans voted her into the last DOA Xtreme game.

Well girls develop differently. Honoka’s bust cup size is almost 100(Japanese measurement) and then you have Marie Rose who is the same age and yet is an A cup size. Same is true with real women. Some get big breasts, some don’t and some get huge breasts. Marie Rose just fell into the smaller category.

I voted for Honoka myself for Xtreme 3.

I would personally like a Create A Fighter like Soul Calibur but it would just be by fighting style not weapon.

Yeah I get that, but it's only half of what I was saying. Marie Rose being so flat chested is suspicious for 2 reasons: a) No woman is ever flat in a DOA game, so it stands out regardless of how likely it is to occur in real life (and the game designers have never been concerned with having accurate/realistic female figures), and b) like I said, when you combine her under-developed figure with her immature personality and mannerisms, you get... a child. There is nothing about her that says adult.

I'm not trying to rag on the game as a whole - I've been a fan of the series for years. I just think it's a little creepy that, in a game franchise famous for sexualizing its female characters, they added a character who seems blatantly childlike and then listed her age as 18 in the character bio so they could get away with it.

As "a fan of the series for years" you may remember that in the original DOA (1996), Ayane was 16, Kasumi was 17; for DOA 6 (2019) they are 18 and 19 respectively...the point being they may as well not even list the ages as they don't correspond to reality any more than the character body types. Which is not to say that none of them are realistic, just uncommon.

Not that any of the above should stop you from being creeped out by the immature behavior for Marie Rose (and Hitomi, Honoka, Lei Fang, Bass, and Zack!).

Just gonna throw this out there. Age of consents different in different countries but Japan has a very real issue with schoolgirl tropes and smutty material. Buxom bodies and child like looks, mannerisms etc.

Well lots of people older than that still behave like children despite being in their 20s, 30s or maybe more who just never seem to act more like adults. So nothing unusual there.Yes her petite body might not help but there’s nothing really wrong with the way she was made.

Plus as far as the age goes, Anime characters and Japanese and other Asian countries people almost always seem to look younger than they actually are. They just don’t seem to age as quickly until they get to like their 30s and 40s. Though with Anime and Japanese games, they even do like having a girl being a 100 but look like a middle schooler or high school. So I doubt they really care about the age. I’ve even some series that have a Mom who looks the same age as the Daughter or maybe just looking a tad older. I think Western fans care more about it then they do.

Koei Tecmo announced at EVO Japan 2019 that Mai Shiranui and one more unannounced fighter from The King of Fighters XIV will join Dead or Alive 6 as part of a collaboration with the fighters.

Guess the roster reveals were not done yet.

No wonder they think they need to tone DOA down and Sony are all in on censorship with stuff like this happening. Damn snowflakes Their brains would have exploded if they MC's did that with Bass and Tina

So it takes 6 main games for EVO to realize that DOA is sexy. But on that 1 video I wonder if the guy playing the game ever looked up to see those girls next to him bouncing.

But honestly I feel like some of the moves the guy characters make are worse than the outfits the girl characters wear and that 1 video showing Bass with Nyotengu is a good example. Of course the people playing made it even worse when they decided to Pause the picture at that moment.

But great to see Mai again.
