You think it’s an above average film yet on your profile it says you rated it a 9/10 which is WAY above average, and close to a perfect film.

That must’ve been from when I first signed up on this site almost 7 years ago. I don’t assign /10 ratings to films anymore and I find it a little odd you would look at my profile just to find what I rated the film. My viewings on films sometimes change with multiple viewings and at that time I had only seen the film once and when it was in theaters I believe. I’d be surprised if someone told me their opinions on a film didn’t change after seeing it more than once. You could find a film is a masterpiece or think a little less of it.

Having seen it a few more times since then, I think TDK is a good but very flawed film.

Wow really? What’s sad is I doubt you’d say this about any non black movie you felt was “above average”.

Man this site has really gone downhill.

I honestly don’t understand why this offends you? All I said is I don’t think BP deserves an Oscar nom.

What do you mean I wouldnt say this about any “non black movie”? I trash on A TON of Oscar nominees, but just because this one has an all black lead apparently I’m racist and ruining the site. It’s for that reason I haven’t watched the Oscars in years, because I don’t think that politics, race, or gender should have a play in what is nominated or not.

Listen I don’t want to argue about this, I don’t understand the academy and probably never will. But to basically call me racist for saying a movie of an all black cast (in my opinion) is above average and doesn’t deserve an Oscar nomination, is absurd.

I haven't been coming here as long as many of you but it didn't take me long to accept that not-so-subtle racism and misogyny are just part of this site's DNA. This thread was actually quite helpful in illuminating that fact. I try really hard to ignore it at this point because I like coming here and discussing what has developed into my favorite hobby with the people who aren't crazy.

Anyway, I haven't watched the Oscars since I was a kid and don't think they matter much, but I do like that they allow the people behind the scenes of some of our favorite movies to receive some well-deserved recognition from time to time. And while this year's batch of Best Picture nominees are somewhat baffling to me, at least Roma is there and will win it all and once again none of it will matter much in the long run.

I think the inclusion of Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody over If Beale Street Could Talk, First Reformed(although they both did get screenplay noms) and Widows is unfortunate. But, I’m definitely glad to see movies like The Favourite, A Star is Born and Roma get lots of recognition. I’m unsure on superhero movies getting Best Picture nominations but, I loved Black Panther so I’m happy to see it get recognized.

I’m of the opinion that the Academy gets a lot wrong(I mean, no Ethan Hawke or Toni Collette?!) but, I still look forward to the broadcast every year and love seeing some of my favorites get recognized(I was ecstatic over GDT’s wins last year).

Not once did I call you a racist. Just confused as to why you had to dig into the black community being “upset”. “Racist” was your word. But a hit dog will holler. So I’m sure you do trash a lot of movies, but do you make it a habit to bring up race when doing so?

And out of RESPECT for my fellow forum members, I would never allude to a movie like Crazy Asians or Goodfellas only getting nominated due to the race each movie represents. It’s insensitive and ignorant. Now you CAN quote me on that.

Dude I said I don’t want to argue. I’m 17 and come here to discuss collecting Blu-ray’s (not a very popular topic at school) I don’t mean to be “racist” but having black relatives I know how upset they would be if it didn’t get the nomination. I guess I just don’t understand why mediocre action movies like this get nominated, but films like The Dark knight, Logan, Mission impossible fallout, and even Infinity War can’t even get s nom.

P.S. I’m sorry if I offended you, but please don’t call me ignorant or racist.

Yeah I don't think Black Panther will win, but I'm hoping that it'll help eliminate the anti-blockbuster stigma that's affected the Academy for a while now (minus some notable exceptions). Then again, I think Weinstein being gone will do more for that than Black Panther will.

Yeah, exactly my thought, you put it more eloquently. I doubt it will win either but it has picked up more momentum. I really should give it a second watch.

The Color Purple
Precious
Django Unchained
12 Years A Slave
Selma
Fences
Hidden Figures
Get Out
BlacKkKlansmen

It explains why these others were nominated.

Seriously, that's a pretty ignorant comment no matter how you felt about the movie.

Don't forget Moonlight which, you know, WON the award.

It only took til the 90th Academy Awards for a predominantly black film to win Best Picture.

I still haven't seen it. A part of me wants to, but I get really weird about some horror movies. I don't want to keep my face covered during the scary moments. I hate jumping out of the chair when I get startled. LOL

Get Out isn't really scary in a traditional horror movie way with jump scares, etc. The horror comes from the subtext.

I get those movies have black leads but none of them are as culturally impactful as BP was/is. No one would’ve have been upset if fences wasn’t nominated because most people hadn’t heard of it like most those movies, besides a few exceptions.

Also please stop calling me ignorant. I know I f***ed up but please just read my other post, I really like this website and don’t want people to think of me as an ignorant racist.

I don't think you're that at all. I felt the statement was because of other films that seem to get forgotten all too easily. They're more than just black leads. These are considered black films.

IMO, The Color Purple was the biggest crime that year because it was truly a beautiful and exceptional film. It was nominated for multiple awards and didn't get one win.

Black Panther, I think it an exceptional film for a lot of reasons and not just because of how it's represented culturally. To me, that's a shallow impression which is not deserved. I don't believe it will win, but I do think it deserves it's place.

12 Years a Slave also won, though Moonlight is a bit more of a big deal though because it had nothing to do with racism or slavery and was also an LGBT film. They’re both incredible movies, though.

Being relatively new to movies I’ve never heard of the color purple, precious, or Selma until now. And what do you mean by “I don’t think you’re that at all”
