Onkyo 806 is the deal..... - Blu-ray Forum

I know there are lots of great receivers out there. But after experimenting with 2 Sonys, a Yamaha and a Denon for about 2 1/2 years, I bought this Onkyo 806. I hooked it up to my Polks, fiddled around with menu settings for a couple of weeks, calibrated everything with a SPL meter from Radio Shack according to Big Daddy's instructions, and I am completely thrilled with the results. I even have everything except my PS3 running on the Onkyo remote. I don't think you can beat it for under $700. Not knocking other brands here. Just wanted to share my own personal great experience with the Onkyo 806.

I own the TX-SR806 (but I've also owned the Denon AVR-2809CI and AVR2309CI at one point in time during the past 3 months) and I must say it's a great receiver as well. For under $700, I will agree with you that it's the best receiver at that price point. But for $750 (what I paid for the AVR-2809CI) I think the Denon wins hands down.

If it weren't for the Denon problem with Sony KDL TVs (audio/video dropouts), I would still have this receiver today because of the superior sound quality (not by much, maybe a .5) and the remote.

The newer TX-SR806's no longer have the Blue Pixel/Dot problem. Onkyo fixed this problem in the newer units and have placed a sticker with the letter "S" over the old serial number (check my HT Gallery, it's the last photo).

I will say that outside of analog inputs, the Onkyo actually comes out on top in just about all the benchmark tests I've seen, including accuracy, distortion and actual power ratings.

I've been doing AVR research for like a month because I am in the market for one and everywhere I read the Denon always rated higher.

I can't find any for the Denon except the 3808 I think. I have to go to class otherwise I would help you guys out.

The 805 is actually at it's published power ratings. Now you know why everyone wants one...I was lucky to snag one recently

While I'm fairly certain that the Onkyo's do have one of the best power supplies on the market (for all-in-one AVR's), I have a hard time believing hometheatermag's findings.

My main reason is that the power supply on the 805 and 806 is largely similar if not identical so how did the two post such different power ratings? No bashing at all here, I love my 805

Serial number does end with a "S". I do not have any blue dot problems. I am sure that if you bought the unit and discovered a problem, any reputable retailer would take it back.

Any of you 806 owners using a PS3 and then a pass through to a DVI display?

Another forum member had handshake issues with this setup, and its the only thing preventing me from buying an 806.

Since I would order on Amazon, I really don't want to deal with a return on a 6000lb receiver if doesn't work.
