Hmm, odd. I always kind of wonder what the embedded ac3 in the Atmos track contained. I wouldn't have thought they'd make a new auto down mix.

It depends. Sometimes they just run off a downmix of the new remix, sometimes they put the OG audio in there. Even though Sony's Spider-Man has a DTS-HD 5.1 backup alongside the remixed Atmos (with its dubious mixing choices), the embedded DD 5.1 is also the OG mix. Blade Runner wasn't so fortunate as the DD 5.1 embed is 100% a downmix of the new mix.

So just for clarification, does this edition

includes all the extras and cuts from this edition?

I'm confused as to the number of discs included across sets, I see bonus dvd discs in the standard 4k set, and bluray bonus discs in others. Both the standard 4k set and special edition one are listed as 4 disc sets, but the standard lists dvds as 2 of the discs, so were the features combined onto a bluray?

Nah. It sounds pretty damn incredible on my 5.1 setup.

Isn't that the French edition? The US got one as well?

I'm a bit miffed about that so-called "Special Edition" 4K release, it's just the 3 discs from the Digibook and the UHD disc for good measure, which is what the standard edition should have been anyway...

WHV should have saved that cool box for a different occasion, like for this year or a 40th Anniversary with a couple new goodies (like the proper sound mix for 4K The Final Cut and 4K Archival Cuts)

If UHD disc is still alive in three years then I'm sure we'll get another visitation from BR, hopefully with a phat new encode for the Final Cut and the archival cuts presented in 4K.

I think this will be the last form Blade Runner will take in my lifetime.

And hopefully the '07 audio mix for the Final Cut

That goes without saying! But if I were offered a choice between a better video encode or the '07 mix then I'd take the better encode. I still don't like the new mix at all but I'm gradually getting used to it (though the replaced effect for gas plume at the start of the 'Hades' shot will always bug the hell out of me) so for now a better encode is my #1 priority. Neither will happen in all likelihood, but an android can dream...

Why you think Warner Bros. did such a subpar job with Blade Runner while not so mythical movies like The Matrix (which I like a lot and own) got a much better treatment, a 3 layer/100 Gb disc and a proper sounding Dolby Atmos mix that downmixes fine on 5.1.

They had extra experience, to put it simply. I really don't think it's a coincidence that after BR Warners started to put a 5.1 OG backup on their UHD Atmos discs (as did Sony, funnily enough), not just to preserve the 5.1 but to circumvent any possible problems with hinky Atmos downmixing. And even though The Matrix downmixes well enough they provided a DD 5.1 backup (user selectable, not embedded) anyway.

As for 100GB, bear in mind that The Matrix is actually on a 66GB disc for the North American release and has a very similar average bitrate to that of Blade Runner (all they did for the 100GB worldwide Matrix disc was mux in a LOAD more language options, and even then it barely hits 70GB) so again, it's more a case of experience IMO. Their authoring house was totally unprepared for handling such a smoky, grainy-looking film when they did Blade Runner, but six months later they handled the graininess of The Matrix with ease.

It's the curse of Blade Runner- doomed to be a perpetual early release on every new format. We always get the enticing treat and then have to watch as pretty much everything manages to quickly surpass it until the next format arrives.

Thanks for your reply. The Warner Bros.are real morons. They gave Pacific Rim a 3 layer/100 Gb disc (if I'm not mistaken) but couldn't give Blade Runner a 3 layer disc. Crazy...
