I know, I know but I wanted to plug that above ^ video not only for continuing educational purposes but also to indirectly recognize/congratulate David for his appointment this year as one of the SMPTE Education Directors for 2019 and Erik for his continued advanced investigation into HDR.
A moment and I’ll post a pic that will keep Waboman warm, despite the weather before we head out for sushi and sake. |

There will probably be a future version of Dolby Vision (/ HDR10+) where dynamic metadata can be carried in a proprietary way as it is now, or in a HDMI 2.1 standard way through the use of Extended Display Information Data (EDID) that allows involved devices communicate back and forth their capabilities:
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-h...l#post57290002 http://mile-high.video/files/mhv2018...1_11_Husak.pdf ![]() . Proprietary way when a non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR device is involved: non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> non-HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR AVR >> HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV ... . Standard way when all devices involved are compatible with HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR: HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR media player >> HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR AVR >> HDMI 2.1 Dynamic HDR TV ![]() |

They would have to change the way that they encode the metadata (duh, obviously) but they would need to retain the existing method as well (encoding it as a scrambled signal in the LSB of the image) to ensure compatibility across all legacy DV devices.

Thanks for that and the other SMPTE videos, Penton.
Interesting side note from that video is that Starz' Counterpart and ABC's The Good Doctor are graded in HDR. Nice to know other networks are stockpiling HDR graded shows. I wonder how many more are graded in HDR that we don't know about? Hoping they will be released in some manner soon. |
