Don’t call him Shirley.

Be honest. You were waiting for that.

Two Christies 4K projectors, recliners with seat transducers and Dolby Atmos sound (with wall rows not being as high as Dolby Cinema usually are and as a result can block surround sound audio cues) I was hearing mix nuances that I hadn't heard before.

The IMAX theater here, since the entire complex was getting a makeover, now has 12-channel sound, but the changeover to laser won't happen til after 'Captain Marvel' and in time for 'Avengers: Endgame' in April.
Speaking of which, is there a way to track which digital xenon Imax theaters have gotten the laser upgrade so far / which ones are due for it when?

How did you find out the planned upgrade date for Rio?

Also the trailer is presented in 1.9 in IMAX.

One other little presentation thing I found interesting is I saw The Wandering Earth during its two day IMAX 3D run in the US (which was apparently very successful) and while the film itself was of course subtitled, they did the full Chinese version (complete with Chinese characters) of the IMAX countdown before the movie. I've seen several Foreign Language films in IMAX before and they never strayed from the traditional US countdown.

They charge 20 for 2d lie-max and 21 for 3d lie-max at my local Regal IMAX theater. My guess is because help pay for Regal Employees and the increase surcharge that IMAX charges to AMC/Regal?

Udvar Hazy charges I think 15? If you come after 4pm you don't have to pay the parking fee which is about 15 I think as well.... :\

Oh I just asked the manager - I praise the experience and then go in for the jugular I think most of the managers in and the around the DMV know me by sight and/or experience

As to Udvar Hazy - unless they've changed it all movies regardless it's 3D or not is $15. The parking is $15 before 5:30pm, free afterwards

The web site says it is $15 before 4pm.

As for knowing you....is that a good thing or bad thing?

AMC's website will list if a theater includes "IMAX with laser at AMC" if you want to check on an individual location. But as far as I know, there is no master list anymore (IMAX used to have one when first launching the laser system but haven't updated it in a couple years I think), nor am I sure if other chains differentiate between digital and laser IMAX.

well the website actually states:

Parking is free at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center for any movie that concludes after 5:30 pm. If a movie ends prior to 5:30 pm, parking is $15 per vehicle.

which I gather means if you've entered before 5:30 and stay past 5:30 it's free - I think? [shrugs]

well ... as to the latter, I can be rather blunt in terms of what I have problems with, I'll state my mind, no qualms, if there's a problem I'll point it out. But all in all, I'm quite friendly about it all and it's nice to hear all the updates and bells & whistles of the various theaters from the managers around the DC area.

So wait what? Don't you still have to pay 15 bucks to get into the parking lot? I saw Dunkirk with a friend there and the movie started at 4pm and we didn't get out until after 6pm...but he still had to pay the 15. I know anytime I go after 6pm, there is no one at the ticket booth and I just drive right thru.

they redid the parking entrance and all, but I haven't been there since this new parking rule ... I'm assuming it's you get a ticket, then pay on the way out now - I always thought it was pay on entrance, I've always been there after 4pm - I'll see what they are doing since I'm heading out over there tomorrow for the 'Lego Movie 2' '$9 Tuesday deal'.

As I recall I think they did only once did not enforce the $15 parking when the Marvel Universe movie series that had screenings before 4pm.

Good to know.

Was just checking the Smithsonian’s website and tickets are on sale for Alita in 3D at Air & Space DC! I don’t have a car and therefore can’t make it to Udvar Hazy easily, so this is good news.

Seen several movies in laser (Tomorrowland and BvS at Udvar Hazy, Dunkirk downtown when they re-released it for a week at the end of 2017), but those were all in 2D. I’m very curious to try out laser 3D. I’m told it uses the “6p” method as opposed to polarization and that I’ll need to wear my contacts if I don’t want to see a haze around everything. That’s probably for the best since my prescription glasses constrain my field of vision.

Happy that I won’t have to pay more for less to see it at AMC or Regal.

I was at Tyson's Corner tonight catching 'Alita: Battle Angel' (Dolby Cinema 3D - 'Fan Event' screening - which was a blast) and did get confirmation that the IMAX screen will be converted over to IMAX-laser in time for 'Avengers: Endgame' (huzzah!)

I'll be catching Alita at Georgetown's IMAX 3D screen (Got tix for tomorrow's Elm Street screening and had to switch up)

Wait what? 9 dollar IMAX Tuesday deal?

Last time I was there was for Avengers last year. So I have no idea what has changed.

That list is out of date though, I see laser locations not refelected on there. It is probably based on the list IMAX had which they stopped like two years ago for whatever reason.

Which locations have added Laser that aren't on the list?

If you know of any it'd be worth reaching out to the editor so they can update the list.

The ones I know of right away are the AMC Empire 25 (I've been there several times since the laser upgrade and it's fantastic) in New York, the AMC Bay Street 16 in California, and the AMC North Park 15 in Texas- which the manager at the Empire 25 mentioned where undergoing the renovations at the same time, and all of which have been updated on the AMC website to reflect the laser change. I'll send an email about those.

But IMAX said they upgraded six domestic sites last Fall in their earnings call, though the others may not been AMC so harder to tell where they are.
