Default Pioneer Kuro 5020 colour banding?

I love my new Kuro 5020, but occasionally I see colour banding in pictures. It happens when the image is a smooth gradient of a colour going from darker to lighter, resulting in discrete banding steps that are visible.

Anyone else seen the same thing? Do I have a defective unit?

Most tv's have it to a degree, it is the result of them juicing up color and contrast. You can either tone down the TV on your own, or get it calibrated.

I have not seen any banding on either of my 5020's or on my 151. What are your setting?

I am using the "Sport" setting, and also brightness +3.

Do yo see this problem with regular TV material or you see it with all the sources, DVD, Blu Ray, games, HD signals and standar signals?

It could be the material. For example, take a look at the fourth pic in my gallery "coming to Theaters". I guess some materials are either intended to show the color banding or they were mastered in low-bit color.

Sounds like a source issue. It usually is the result of some highly compressed transfers.

Sorry if I am stealing your thread but my friend just recently got a 5020 from work (Ultimate Electronics) and when watching his tv, and using his PS3, howcome I see rainbow trails sometimes? Am I just not used to plasmas?

+1, and also, i think that your brightness setup at +3 is high you should bring it down to 0 or -1.

I haven't seen any banding on anything but the occasional movie/show on HD cable that was obviously highly compressed.

That said, you should definitely turn the brightness down. Also, you should only really use the Movie, Game, or Optmium setting on Kuros according to D-Nice's review on AVS Forum. The sports and standard settings look really strange to me.
