Thanks, man. My setup I'm keeping things simple to begin with. All I have is a DirectTV HD receiver and a PS3 for all movie watching and gameplay. Of course both are HDMI compatible so the 820 will do the trick. I just don't know if I can justify paying another $100 for video upconvert for the few analog devices I MIGHT be using. In all honesty, you gain nothing in buying the Sony 820 receiver over the Sony 720 since you have a PS3 that is going to handle the decoding of HD audio, so if you are actually trying to go the cheap route and keep it simple the Sony 720 will suffice, unless you plan on buying a standalone down the road.

Very understandable because I do know that the 720 supports pass-through so then I could have saved a $100 bucks there. But yes, a standalone is very possible. In the past, the PS2 was my primary DVD player until I bought a standalone to help preserve the PS2. It's possible that by the time I decide to buy a standalone Blu-ray player, all players decode lossless audio. That in particular was a chance I was willing to take. But what was a big factor (of all things) were the screw binding posts which makes higher speaker gauge wire easier to attach over the spring levers that my old receiver only had.

funny, i thought the same thing and was one of the main reasons i went with the 820. those spring clips were a big turn off and made the 720 just seem cheaper quality
