On my part, I charge it only when the batteries are low.

I can't really speak for the battery life since I've had a Harmony 1000 for only a month but I can understand your fear of having a rechargeable battery fail after a short time, specially since they tend to be expensive to replace... But let's face it, right now these types of batteries are in portable phones, cameras, ipods, etc. As for a universal remote, most remotes don't eat up batteries really fast, so the frequency of charge cycles should be pretty low and the possibility that your battery doesn't last should be pretty low also.

I have no experience with the 720 but I have the 520 (now retired...), 550 and 1000. For that price the 720 seems to be a good value. If you're concerned about the rechargeable battery get a 550 you will be able to do the same things as with the 720 (except that you won't have a color screen) but using AAA batteries of your choice.
