The thing that bothered me about Halloween 2018 is that everything leading up to its release had me sold hook line and sinker. I truly believed they had a fresh take on the franchise. David Gordon Green, while he has made some garbage, has made 5 films I've absolutely loved, as well as a couple others I've liked just fine. When he and Danny McBride were announced for the project as writers(with DGG directing), and then when it was announced that not only is Carpenter coming back as EP AND Composer, but also they are bringing back Jamie Lee, I was like S**T , they have SOMETHING up their sleeves. Then when I actually saw the film, I kept waiting for that trump card, for some kind of fresh idea, for something that gave me even 10% of the HOLY F*** feeling I had by the ending of original film when I was 12. But it never came. It was a HUGE letdown for how excited I let myself get. I didn't hate it, I enjoyed it to an extent. Especially in comparison to the later entries and the remakes. But at the end of the day it was just more of the same. DGG, DM, JC and JLC all bluffed me, and I folded. Then they turned their cards over and were like, yeah, we had nothing.

Yes I think this is probably the main issue for people. I agree completely. Its not a bad film, just a mediocre sequel which makes the retconning of all the other films even more pointless and arrogant. It finished and I was like.....thats it?

I still say calling the sequel simply "The Shape" is a great idea.

That reminds me of an issue I had upon my recent rewatch - Laurie calls Michael 'The Shape' at the dinner scene, and it just feels very odd to me. Perhaps I'm alone on this one, but her using that within the film threw me right off for a second.

I've never liked him being referred to as "the shape" in general because he already has a damn name and that nickname just feels forced to me.
But as I remember it in the 2018 film, I can appreciate the way they worked it in. In my view, Laurie is speaking from the traumatized perspective. "The shape" does mean something to her because much of her memory of him is of a silhouette in the dark. When she calls him the shape in that moment, she's recalling the trauma that seeing him outside the prison brought to her mind, not referring to the individual just-a-man himself. I actually think it's good exposition. But can also def see how it would be distracting.

H20 was retconned. H4 and everything after was wiped out. Why do people keep forgetting that?

Retcon. Revise. Ignore. Wipe out. Whatever. The new film didn't do anything of value to justify doing any of those things.

They're not forgetting, it's just that H20 gets a pass from many as it was kind of a shitty cash grab aimed at the Scream audience more than it was Halloween fans. This film however was promised as being a return to form. It's like being satisfied with McDonalds when you are only expecting fast food, but then get promised something more gormet, and it turns out to be another Big Mac.

Glad the new film retconned the sequels. No more sibling angle, no silly cults, pedophilia and rape. New film was great.

Another issue for me is that this movie treats Myers as if he is the legend we know from the movies. But if your going to erase all sequels then he was just a guy in a mask who killed about 5 people. He has been in prison for over 40 years for those crimes but everyone in the film acts as if he has the history of all the sequels.

People hate the sibling thing but nothing is more dumb than Laurie wandering around in the dark looking for Myers. Its that kind of lazy horror trope that made this such a letdown. That kind of crap just doesn't wash with modern horror.

The point is, other films in this series have done that. Yet only this one seems to be getting all the flak.

Only from the minority. The majority loved it and it was a huge success. I noticed most everyone who didn’t like it love some of the worst in the series like part 6 and RZ Halloween II lol

Maybe because, as mentioned by others, this movie promised to be something great, a true sequel to Carpenters original with the man himself on board. People were fervently anticipating it and all it was was another sequel that copied so much of what it chose to ignore.

There is no sarcasm when I say good for you. It would be a quiet forum if we all agreed on everything. I have said before it has some great parts and I loved the score. Hope you enjoy the next one as much
