Really have 0 interest in 8k at this point. I understand the tv makers want new buzzwords to win over your average consumer though. Seems like upscaling things to 8k will cause more issues than making anything look better but maybe I'm wrong.

LOL - I strongly doubt the "average consumer" has money to afford a new 8K TV let alone any interest in it.

On the other hand the "bleeding edge" consumer may be a prospective buyer.

I have lived in Japan for 7 years. I haven't seen 8K as a standard yet. I haven't seen 4K as a standard yet. I'm not saying the resolution of 4K or 8K doesn't exist, I'm just saying I haven't seen it yet. 4K TVs are a big deal to most Japanese consumers, but most do not have it. I can say for a fact that my Japanese friends are amazed that I have 4K.

interesting & confusing
  • question :: do you currently live in Japan?
  • clearly :: 8k/4K is currently available in Japan
  • note :: while i do not live in Japan, i have had the opportunity to view 8K many times throughout past years
  • my reaction? :: i want it; at least an 8K display/processor (asap)
  • does 8K matter? :: yes (for myself) :: but i always appreciate 'quality picture' advancements
  • Japan (8K/4K) :: it's widely known (worldwide) that Japan 'bypassed' 4K entirely, opting to 'go directly to' 8K, sooner rather than later (as the rest of the entire world has 'unfortunately done/not-done')
  • information (yours) :: it's understandable that in Japan, that whatever 4K is, or has not been, given that development has been entirely dedicated to 8K, although 4K is supported in their '8K broadcast system', so i expect 'both of the UHD 'resolutions' to be 'concurrently supported' now that they are broadcasting - 12/1/18)
  • information (mine) :: i live in the United States (most everyone known to me, has neither heard of UHD/4K or own it, which is not surprising given their respective lack of interest in anything beyond DVD quality or cost for that matter (generally/surprisingly, they 'simply do not care/appreciate' picture quality, which is fine - it's their choice)
  • information (mine) :: i can admit, that i know very little of what displays/players are, and have been available in recent years regarding UHD/4K, however from what i have known of Japan regarding both audio and UHD1/UHD2, i would expect that they have availability of audio/video equipment that's far superior to what is available in the United States, so i would expect that 4K displays/players of the highest quality have been available (what is the fact/truth?)
  • Japan (8K content) :: it might be of interest to know, that on the first day of broadcast, that presentation of an '8K native master' of 2001: the Space Odyssey, was available for viewing, with My Fair Lady to follow later this year (both are sourced from original 70mm content and paid for by Japan to the studio) :: also, well-known is that their forthcoming Olympics coverage will be broadcast live in 8K, as well as other events currently filmed world-wide for later broadcast

We need more 8K free content, not only from NASA but also from National Geographic, Life, Paris Match, Documentary Heaven, YouTube, Nature, Scientific Earth, World Things, Wide Sports, Mountain Ascensions, Future Cities, Global Warming, Climate Change, Wildlife.

We also need more 4K content in (((3D))); this is an open free market that nobody had the guts to explore yet. With 8K it should be easy as ABC.

It seems that in North America the leaders in visual technology are afraid to explore the very best. It's like they are dictated by the banking system instead of the forward 3D evolution. Maybe when we reach 16 and 32K, just before 4D Holography?
And forget it about those 3D virtual goggles. We like to have our heads, eyes and ears and senses free...without wearing any silly gear...goggles, headphones and sunglasses.

Samsung to Showcase 8K TVs at Experience Stores

Samsung has announced the launch of three Samsung Experience stores in the U.S.

The first three stores will open Wednesday (February 20) at the Galleria in Houston, the Americana at Brand shopping complex in Glendale, CA, and at the Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, New York, providing a place where the public can go to “get a feel for Samsung products first-hand.”

The openings will coincide with a “10 years of Galaxy” celebration and follow Samsung 837, a “living lab and digital playground” for the company’s products and technologies that opened in New York City three years ago.

Like an Apple Store, visitors to Samsung Experience locations will get hands-on demos of Samsung products, including its new 8K TVs, virtual reality (VR), SmartThings devices, wearables, tablets, and smartphones. The stores will also feature a 4K gaming lounge and offer customer support, including walk-in repair for mobile devices.

Default 8K/3D (interesting information?)

for what it's worth
  • and, please keep in mind that i have seen '8K/3D - glasses free - some time ago'
  • also, i personally do not appreciate 3D, while i do appreciate that others do
  • this information, is for the purpose of 'helping others' with an interest in the 'future of 3D'
  • another thing to 'get out of the way' is that Hollywood (manufacturers) seem to also 'want 3D', so i am expecting that someday it will get another run (consumer content/displays)
  • another bit of information (that i have not come across any postings on this site/forums) is that there is a 'very real' trade off of either 3D or HDR (it's a display design issue)
  • back to 8K/3D (glasses-free - as demonstrated) :: anyone with an interest in 3D (as such) will find it 'really nice (actually highly satisfying), definitely fulfilling exceptions' (far closer to nature;/realistic than expected)
  • however, for it to work (properly) you 'simply must be dead-center in-the-middle of the viewing area/distance, for it to work
  • anyone representing it otherwise, is 'simply wrong' (it's a somple matter of physics/science)
  • viewing it from the 'defined sweet-spot' it works as expected (one-person-only) - (one set of eyes - only)
  • i have experienced this a long-time-ago, but have consciously not previously posted on it, to avoid controversy
  • my reason for posting now, (lost my mind?) i simply cannot explain, but i do think that it might interest a few
  • personally, i wish the dialogue were 'less combative' than i expect, but 'we shall see' what develops with this posting
  • in closing, i simply think that this information might be helpful to those with an interest in 3D, or i would have continued in silence of this information

Looks like Samsung's new 8k tvs may be on display tomorrow, when 3 brand new Samsung Experience stores open up in the USA. NYC, Texas, and California.

Streaming service Rakuten TV triples smart screen reach and takes on Netflix with 8k

Streaming service provider Rakuten TV is stepping up its VOD war with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, by expanding into 42 countries and promising 8k content before the end of the year.

It is also partnering with Samsung, LG, Philips and Hisense to introduce a dedicated remote control button on their respective smart TVs. The move will enable the European streaming TV service to reach more than 30 million households.

Rakuten TV says it will offer the widest 4K HDR movie catalogue available through Smart TVs, as it pursues "the best cinema experience at home." The company also says it will introduce 8K technology VOD distribution “during the second semester of 2019.”

Rakuten TV currently rents movies in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos via LG TVs, and is the VOD partner for IMAX Enhanced in Europe. It has also bankrolled its own movie slate, including Hurricane (pictured).

Heh. I may not give two shits about 8K, but I knew it was only a matter of time before 8K streaming became a thing.

about 8K and the possibility of 3D in 4K res. I have 0 interest in glasses free technology so get the current one with glasses and make it right this time. also the fact that we don’t even have 4K broadcasted yet by major TV channels is another turn off and the rumors about the possibility of no physical media in 8k.

That is the only drawback of 1080p 3D. The loss of detail.
I watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vo1.2 in 2D and the bit where Groot is dancing at the start of the movie, and for the first time I noticed the speaker on screen (that later gets smashed) is vibrating. You can make out the speaker vibrating in 2D but that detail is lost in 3D.

In an ideal world, you'd have the detail (4K) AND the vibrant colours (HDR/DV) AND the depth (3D). That's the dream.
