He gave me "crap" because I redeemed 24 of the codes that came with my discs and because I rented a movie on Vudu (which led to a disc purchase). He told me that in a year's time that I would be a digital convert.

I buy more discs in two months than he does in an entire year. I have been buying physical media for over three decades, which is longer than he has even been an adult.

I do all that I can to support books, music, movies, and TV shows on physical media. I seldom buy games, but I can do better in that area when I do buy them in the future.

Nothing about the entertainment industry is a winner takes all situation. As long as traditional TV remains a large enough market it will continue. As long as passive entertainment remains a large enough market it will continue. It doesn't matter if mobile or interactive media is larger.

Everyone who is buying (or renting) traditional movies and TVs is helping to prevent the future you've predicted. We don't have to shun everyone who makes different choices to prove our support for the industry we love.

We are a few years from a world of hurt, sticking with disc could have helped the industry and gave us a few more years. However, people dive into the free/cheap codes arena and have screwed it for us.

We now face the end times with the end of film (in our lifetime). Younger people will make sure of that.

All those guys that say both can exist and happy clap all the time? Well, this week, it was confirmed Samsung are pulling out of the Blu-ray market. That’s directly as a result of streaming.

Like I always say, consequences my friends, consequences.

Anyone who is buying cheap codes is supporting disc supporters.

And I don't see any connection between buying films in digital form and the end of film, anyone who is buying or renting films in any form (theater, disc, digital, subscription) is supporting the film industry.

Nope. We are all doing just fine.

Samsung leaving the disc player market has no bearing on people's interest in movies. None. It may, or may not, have bearing on people's interest in owning movies, but not in watching them.

Only you have these irrational fears.

Like I always say in reply, delusions, my friend, delusions.

Not irrational, based on real world changes. You are in denial about the younger generations behaviour patterns. If less and less people embrace film, there has to be consequences eventually.

Also, if my iPad tries to replace a e with a 3 once more, I’m going to smash the thing against the wall.

You have no facts to support any of your contrived scenarios. The absence of these facts proves the presence of delusions.

Any time that someone younger than you uses their phone in a manner that you disapprove of, you cite that as "proof" of your paranoid prophecies. Any time someone develops a new form of entertainment for mobile devices, it MUST mean the utter death of something else. You take random observations and random facts and make ridiculous wild dire conclusions from them every single time.

Real world facts: Movie box office receipts are UP, big screen TV sales are UP. The number of movies released on disc are up 12.86%.

Streaming services like Netflix are making what? Movies! Passive long form content in record quantities! Why would they do that? Because people enjoy movies.

If you are going to live in a fantasy world, build yourself a pleasant one, or even try visiting us here in the real world for a change.

Anyway, it's time for more pie for me. Try not to scare yourself to death.

Because I live in the middle of nowhere so I don't have access to stores to buy what I'm looking for and I'm always ordering from bestbuy.com so it was always convenient to order multiple items to get free shipping.

I live in the asscrack of rural nowhere myself (population 1,600) and I order my stuff online, too. Best Buy is hardly your only online choice. Many online retailers offer free shipping if you meet their requirements.

I'm done buying physical discs. I bought two brand spanking new Blu-ray discs today and both of them are defective. Not a scratch on either one. Sure I can't take my VUDU collection and go watch it at my brother-in-law's house like I can with a Blu-ray, but no defective downloads that stop halfway through the movie. Plus couldn't I download these and watch them offline through my laptop? I have an HDMI cable and power cable so it's not too much hassle.

My media shopping has been on the decline for years so I only get a little here and there and Best Buy, due mostly to exclusive SteelBooks, so ordering from Best Buy has always been convenient. I usually only buy from other retailers during Black Friday and keep to my exclusives from Best Buy. So with the CD that just came out I wanted to purchase would have been beneficial to get with my recent Best Buy purchase. So I'm just annoyed they don't sell CDs anymore. I know there are other options and avenues out there its just Best Buy was always my convenience. This being a digital vs physical thread I was just letting out my grievance.

Is Amazon.com not an option? That's where I buy most of my CDs.

I don't really shop with Amazon. Had some issues in the past with them so mostly I don't deal with them.

If I stopped shopping at every place that I've had issues with there would be nowhere left to shop.

Default Pros and Cons of discs vs digital

Just thought i'd make a list based on what people think the pros and cons are of each format.
Pros of Blu-rays
- No Internet required for playback
- No buffering, just insert and watch
- Much better audio quality. Netflix sounds so bad that even Youtube sounds better
- Better video quality with much better compression, less banding, black level issues like black level macroblocking.
- Extras and Commentaries on quite a few releases
- Alternate cuts of movies that can sometimes be better than the original
- No censorship issues like loosing a movie or songs from that movie that can plague streaming.
- More releases that are in their OAR rather than being cropped on streaming, though not always the case
-Sometimes better masters on disc than streaming though this can be hit or miss

Pros of Streaming
-No storage space needed to watch movies, just stream and that's it
-4K streams that are not released on discs unfortunately including new masters
-cheaper(not sure if this counts considering how poor value streaming really is)
- exclusive releases including tv shows and movies that will likely not be released on discs.
- can be watched easily on the go or downloaded with account logged in, rather than not having a digital copy, or using something like UV or Itunes

despite writing about some positives of streaming, i prefer discs by far for sure, even though they can be a bit of an issue space wise. Maybe one day when I can buy a 100tb hard drive or more, I could rip everything on to a nas and then put all my blurays in storage

Every year, statistics point at the younger generation’s mobile screen time increasing at the expense of the tv. That is short form Youtube, snapchat, Facebook etc.. young people are nagging with gaming in record numbers at the expense of movies and tv watching time.

I agreed especially with the line about more and more people less willing to pay for passive media in the future. That’s something I have thought for a long time. I guess the only option then would be a free Spotify style service with ads and all the other stuff these services can get about what shows we watch etc..

I'm 100% a physical format fan, and agree with the advantages you have listed; I would also include the fact that you own your copy as being a major plus as well, and worth mentioning are the additional items sometimes included with the packaging, such as booklets.

In theory, how long do you guys think we would have new films released IF I am right and our youngest generation won’t pay for passive entertainment at all? Or even abandon psssive entertainment. I guess we would be relying on the 40+ generation to keep it going.
