I remember reading in Amazon a lot of negative customer reviews for Pan's Labyrinth because of it being in spanish... ????????????????

The movie was one of the best I've seen and a lot of people are missing it only because it is not in English!

I like foreign films and I prefer watching them subtitled than watching them dubbed.

When my wife and I went to see Pan's Labyrinth I didn't know if it would have English dubs or not and then we found out when it started it wouldn't and had subtitles the whole time. At first we were kinda like ugh, but then as the movie went we found ourselves lost in the wonderful story, background, characters, scenery, etc. and didn't even think about the subtitles again until the movie was over. Excellent movie.

Der Untergang (Downfall)

Wo hu cang long (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)

Das Boot (The Boat)

are the only ones I own.

But other good ones:

Rashomon
Ladri di biciclette (The Bicycle Thief)

i'm the same way. i notice the subtitles in the beginning, then as the movie progresses i just forget about them and they become part of the movie.

I understand bits and pieces of Spanish, but Pan's Labyrinth was enhanced by the Spanish narration even though I couldn't understand much. The tonal inflections got the message across in a way that dubbing would never do.

One movie I never finished, The Lives of Others, seems to be good but I had difficulty keeping up with the visual story and reading the dialogue.

Downfall
Ran - Akira Kurosawa's retelling of the King Lear story set in feudal Japan! Brilliant!
Apocalypto - Not technically a foreign film, but it is all subtitled.

Growing up in Sweden I'm more than accustomed to subtitles. With the exception of mainstream animated movies (e.g. Disney/Pixar) we basically don't have any dubbed movies whatsoever. Most Swedes, including myself, have probably learned English primarily from American TV/movies (with Swedish subtitles) rather than at school.

Nowadays, while my understanding of American as well as British English is more or less perfect, I actually do prefer to watch movies with English subtitles enabled. I probably only read them sporadically and subconsciously though as I'm not distracted from the movie at all. However I do notice distinctively "bad" subtitles (as in subtitles that differs a lot from the actual dialogue, e.g. all Rambo movies included in the UK box) quickly. For the same reason I can't stand Swedish subtitles either.

I'm actually quite picky about it... I don't like translated titles either. I won't even buy Swedish/Nordic releases with Swedish/Danish/Norwegian/Finnish subtitles only

As for suggestions; Battle Royale!
