Default Playing 7.1/6.1 tracks on a 5.1 system

Question for you fine folks.... I can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I use a PS3 as my blu-ray player. I have an Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver which is properly configured for a 5.1 system. My PS3 sound settings are set to auto... so the 7.1 sound options are checked. When I watch a 7.1 or 6.1 soundtrack, my PS3 sends that to my receiver. I know this because hitting display on the receiver confirms it (for example it will say MCH 7.1 for multi channel 7.1). Since I am sending it via LPCM, am I to assume my receiver is not touching the sound and I am losing the two back channels?

I would go in to the PS3 options and uncheck the 7.1 boxes, however I've found that it screws up the sound options on other games. I don't want to have to tinker with the ps3 sound settings every time.

I just want to confirm that my receiver is down mixing things to 5.1 when it receives a signal that is 6.1/7.1. Is there a way to test? thanks!

Select the 5.1 audio track from the movie's menu.

i don't think 7.1 dts-hd MA tracks have 5.1 options, and going to a DD 5.1 mix is not the solution i was looking for

I just added a rear center channel for 6.1 sound in my house. I know this may be off subject, but is there a list of movies that have 6.1 surround sound? Also, will 7.1 movies like Shoot'em Up and Prince Caspian downscale the audio for 6.1? I don't mean to change the thread but i have searched the forum and haven't found much dealing with 6.1 sound. Thanks.

It just downmixes the 7.1 to 5.1 for you.

To further explain this, you are not loosing any channels. The Onkyo is combining the rear surround and back surround channels together. Keeping the right and left channels separate, of course.

Here is a list: http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php

You can also do searches on this site: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php

Which results in something like this:

6.1
7.1

i had this doubt in other thread. i have Onkyo 606 and Sony S-300. I have my Onkyo receiver set up in 5.1. So if i play a movie DTS-master audio 7.1 channels i will get a "core" DTS 5.1 track, am i right? in other words the S-300 downmixes the 7.1 DTS track to 5.1? does this new 5.1 audio track work fine?

No, you'll get the DTS-HD MA track, with the surround back channels downmixed into your surrounds. IE, DTS-HD MA 5.1.

Did they add DTS-HD MA decoding to the BDP-S300? I know that when it came out it didn't have that capability.

no, s-300 doesn't decode DTS-MA we only can get the core DTS track.

Thanks for your help, I had thought the onkyo wouldn't touch an LPCM signal, which led me to believe that it would downmix for me. If I could only find a 7.1 test audio file I could test this out and not have to worry about it!!!
