United Kingdom An American Tail (1986) - Fabulous Films - 12th June 2017

An American Tail (1986)

Quote:
An American Tail is a 1986 American animated musical adventure family drama film directed by Don Bluth and produced by Sullivan Bluth Studios and Amblin Entertainment.[1] It tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz and his family as they emigrate from Russia to the United States for freedom. However, he gets lost and must find a way to reunite with them. It was released on November 21, 1986, to reviews that ranged from positive to mixed and was a box office hit, making it the highest-grossing non-Disney animated film at the time.

This film was always a favourite of mine growing up, along with Bluth's "The Land Before Time" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven".
There has been a region AB (possibly C) release in the US since 2014, it's review states "video presentation is a disappointment, pure and simple".
I imagine Fabulous Films release is just a port of that disc, but I'd be happy to be corrected.

Gave the UK Blu-ray a watch. I don't have both versions to hand to compare directly, but I feel safe saying that it's a port of the U.S. one (or at least is using the same master). It certainly suffers with all the problems noted in this site's review.

Maybe one day, Universal will give the film a proper restoration.

Out of curiosity, what are the sound options on this disc?

The 5.1 remix on the US DVD and Blu-ray is a really strange creation, with extra sound effects, altered voices, and even re-edited music in at least one spot.

English DTS-MA 5.1 is the only option on the disc.

Unfortunately, the UK DVD - both its Dolby and DTS tracks - and this Blu-ray share the same alterations done to them with voices, etc, as the US versions.

As suspected, in comparing the UK disc to the US reviews screenshots, it appears to be the same poor master. (not a straight port, note the slight framing difference) A couple of comparison screens here;

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/131335

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/131336

The film file reads as having a bitrate of 34.6Mbps, the problems must be baked into the master. So unless they do a restoration, this is it for the format...

_______

Also, a comparison with the UK DVD, same 2 shots but had to do separate links (uploading multiple pics fails for me sometimes);

EDIT: Here's a quick sample I'd uploaded to imgur showing the similarities of the US vs UK disc;

I don't own the disc, but they are listed on the shot of the back cover, that can be seen here.

Be aware though, this doesn't mean that the subtitles are on the actual disc.
