I almost wish that Green and McBride had gone through with their original idea of having the opening scene be a recreation of the ending of the original film but with Loomis being killed by Michael and Laurie shooting Michael off the balcony. I’m curious what the reaction would’ve been to that insane idea.

I understand there’d be a negative reaction. I’m just wondering how negative because it seems to me like one of the worst script decisions of all time and I can’t see a single rational person praising that choice.

Thousands of films have had silly ideas like that in the history of film. It didn’t happen, it’s irrelevant.

It would’ve been much more than a silly idea. What other high-profile movie is a sequel to a movie that completely retconned the ending of the original to the point that it makes no sense at all?

Your question is like asking what would have happened if WW2 hadn’t broke out. It’s meaningless and irrelevant because it happened. |

It would have overshadowed the rest of the film too strongly and it's nice that the unnecessary story thing didn't happen. |

I listened to the track “Hawkins Arrives at Crash Site” from the expanded soundtrack while watching the scene it was composed for and I have no idea why David Gordon Green decided not to use it. It’s such a chilling and effective track. It’s similar to what was used in the film but it also has that piano melody that was used in the original film when Loomis was at the Myers house. This track is one of the best on the soundtrack and definitely should’ve been left in the movie.

I love H'18, but I was kind of surprised how restrained and limited the score was considering how much it helped drive the narrative in H'78 so much. There were several scenes in H'18 that would have benefited from having some of Carpenter's incredible score to heighten the suspense or add to the mood.
The scene and the track that bobbyh64 mentions is a perfect example. It's a great scene as is with moody atmosphere and it's wonderfully lit, but with that track...WOW! It just ramps up the tension and that classic theme feels like it belongs there. I was puzzled why we didn't get an updated version of the classic Laurie's Theme. I liked the new theme just fine, but it's so brief that it's barely associated with Laurie throughout the rest of the movie. Also, I'm not sure why they rushed through the opening credits to the point that the opening Halloween Theme was truncated. It's such an incredible opening and I would have milked it for all it's worth and slowed it down a bit. The soundtrack has the full version and it plays much better. Of course, this is all just nit picking. No doubt Carpenter's going to knock it out of the park with the scores to Kills and Ends, I just hope his music is used much more strategically and judiciously throughout those films. |
