Receivers don't use any Microsoft operating system and are not affected by updates. If you're talking about network receivers, they are a different story but still aren't affected by Microsoft's operating system updates.

The OP made a valid point, though, that most receivers on the market right now need Windows XP to make firmware updates. Case in point, my Harman Kardon AVR 354 has "compatibility issues" with Vista for the software needed to update the firmware in the receiver. Thus, one needs an XP version of Windows to run the update.

Note that I don't know of any Mac compatibility either.

Even if there was a necessary update that just had to be done for some reason, you could contact the receiver manufacturer and see how they could help you out. (There are other ways of updating your receiver)

While I agree that there are "other ways", they were, at the time, limited to:

1) Finding a local qualified service representative to come to my house and do the update, the same way I did it, or;
2) Finding a local qualified service representative to whom I could bring the receiver so the update could be done there.

Neither of those seemed appealing. I realize this is an HK shortcoming, as they have very limited personnel in North America, none of which are service reps per se. Anyways, just thought I'd chime in...

I think you can update receivers using the optical out on a CD player with a burned CD too.

I had a sony HDTV that needed a f/w update and sony sent a 256k USB flash drive with the f/w on it. That is an option too if the manufacturer's CS will do that.
